Recommend me a cx/gravel commuter

Brakes are consumables anyway, just replace the cable versions with hydro when you need new pads.

Gets exxy when you’re brakes have shifters in them to

I did have that thought after the post, then you probably want to recable etc etc.

ORDERED! Kona Rove ST heading my way

what color ??

No no no, you’re supposed to keep this thread running for a few weeks, get some really strong suggestions, then get something completely out of left field that nobody else likes.

The only other FOA option is to not talk about it at all and just turn up with a new bike.

qft.

Third (and most common) option is a normal thread until Joni swoops in and SASSES THE PLACE UP.

I know y’all talking about me.

For the record… I won the suggestion game!! Suck eggs!!

Maybe. Current sale price is $2.2k with 105 hydro, but Idk how flexible dealers are on sale prices.

edit: Too slow. Rove ST is a solid choice.

Soz. Order cancelled…

Now looking at a Canyon Grail. Might see about swapping the fork for a lauf.

Give us a review when you’ve had a couple rides. Been eye-ing one.

Yeah. Looked at the sequoia yesterday at jetcycles. Dude there told me to get a diverge instead.

Picked up the Kona for a few hundred cheaper, so some play money still there if I want to upgrade something or get an accessory or two.

Thinking about getting a midnight special, won’t be able to buy a bike for a while after next week so figure i’ll get in before i dont have a say in what i buy.

Sounds like Cam is getting married!

Midnight special looks cool. Weird rear dropouts I’d probably want to see in person. Also seems similar spec to the Kona and a couple of others. But a good 800 bucks or so more expensive at the moment.

It’s white though, if it’s a wedding bike?

So as usual… bike hasn’t even arrived yet, and already I’m looking at accessories. This morning’s commute had me thinking about saddle bag setups instead of rack and pannier. Mostly because I rarely fill the 22L pannier, and having a cleaner looking bike when not commuting (without the need to remove a rack) would be nice. Plus vanity. aesthetics of racks, and #bikepacking.

Anyone had any experience with Topeak’s ‘backloader’? BACKLOADER | Topeak

I’ve had pretty good experiences with their stuff over the years, and reviews of this stuff seem positive, but who knows who is shilling Topeak these days.

In other accessories news… going for flat pedals with some nukeproof shin scrapers.

I know they’e not cool in this era of bikepacking butt rockets and such, but for commuting it’s pretty hard to beat a Carradice-style saddle bag. You can fit a commuting load of clothes/shoes/whatnot as well as a laptop without dramas. Can even get quick release setups if you don’t want to leave it on the bike.

Not to everyone’s aesthetic tastes, but they’re very practical.

Yeah, I bought a “butt rocket” with the idea of adding capacity to the roadie, and to run on my folder where I needed to drop the post way down, but it wasn’t great for commuting. Camping where you were filling it to capacity, fine I guess, but on the commute where my luggage may vary a lot each way, it just didn’t hold its shape and then it would bounce and sway. And just chucking stuff in like it didn’t matter, did matter in terms of getting it stable. All setups are different, but I was a little disappointed.

That said, I run a little Ortlieb accessory pouch as a handlebar bag now and it is pretty versatile.
