Revamped (?) code of conduct

http://www.vic.cycling.org.au/Participation/CyclistsCodeofConduct.pdf

“Cyclists will be hit with stiff penalties if they break cycling laws
that include obeying red lights ($220), stop signs and give way signs
($182), riding more than two abreast, not using a bicycle lane, not
wearing a helmet, causing a traffic hazard or riding within two metres
of the rear of a moving vehicle (for more than 200m continuously) – all $55”

I’m sure nobody here does any of those things…

These codes of conduct are a total waste of time.

…time passes…

OK so I actually read it, and I was right. This so-called code of conduct serves no useful purpose.

It says you must use a bicycle lane, implying without exception. The Victorian road rules say:

“The rider of a bicycle riding on a length of road with a bicycle lane designed
for bicycles travelling in the same direction as the rider must ride in the bicycle
lane unless it is impracticable to do so.”

unless it is impracticable to do so

And…apparently, listening to a “personal audio device” whilst riding is so horrifyingly fraught with disaster that you should never do it. Why is it that car stereos which have become increasingly louder over the years, along with better insulated cars, are sold as a benefit.

In any case, the only people who’ll sign up to a code of conduct are the people who already behave responsibly. People who don’t give a fuck about road rules, aren’t going to give a fuck about a code of conduct either. People who support it are probably already obeying it.

The only thing it will achieve is persuading people that bikes should not be on public roads.

WOFTAM

I’d like to know where the dollars go to. Do you think they’d go to developing more bike lanes? Not likely :x

Chris it sounds like we have to act like mediore dicks and leave our punkifications at home

YEAH RIGHT

i ride listening to black flag, exclusively.

Sneaky Sounds Rocks my world. I just need a fluro TT pad to go with my loafers :stuck_out_tongue:

My personal favourite:

“Keep your thumbs under the handlebars in case of sudden bumps”

I dislocated a thumb once doing just that.

Load of shit. Where’s the code of conduct for cars?

How about a code of conduct for all road users?

It’s pretty simple:

1: Know that there are rules, that they serve a purpose, even if you disagree with them, and that it is your responsibility to follow them.

2: Remember your humanity - other road users are human, so treat them with tolerance and respect.

3: Be prepared to compromise and forgive.

4: Have a go at empathising with your fellow road users.

word.

and when all else fails, a good Dlock can destroy a windshield in one swing…

ndf, there’s a seat for you at the United Nations

my boss was telling me that last week, in sydney, her boyfriend was riding and a car clipped him. he rode up beside the offending vehicle and said “hey, just be careful, not sure if you noticed but you clipped me back there.”

he then wheeled around and got in front of her on the passenger side. the woman nudged him, knocked him of his bike then ran over his bike.

fortunately for him (unfortunately for the scrap in the car) another car chased her down and got her rego and came back to let him know they’d take him to the cops.

what a shitdude of a woman.

empathy is the key. I couldn’t believe some of the comments about the rider who was killed after he was hit by a truck:

I think this about sums it all up

Obviously some intelligent readers posting here, especially our little friend from across Bass Strait. But hey, I’m sure he is man enough to look Amy Gillet’s parents in the face and tell them their daughter deserved to die… Are there bike riders that abuse the road rules, such as running lights etc just because they are on a bike - of course there are! In the same mould - do you tar all car drivers with the same brush as the 4 kids that were killed allegedly speeding in Melbourne on the weekend? Bike riders need to be properly educated on how to ride safely on the road just as we as car owners need to lose the arrogance that this is OUR road. From my experience, it is a minority on both sides that abuse the rules. Tarring all of one group with the same brush would be like me saying you must be married to your sister because you are Tasmanian…

People will say a lot of things when they know they don’t actually have to answer to anybody.

theres some real ethug comments in that thread!
some people really are DUMB.

No. People are not dumb. Just very very selfish. Everybody is (in their own way).

Most drivers actually realize that having more cyclists lowers congestion and is less of a tax burden (in terms of health care and road maintenance). But it still doesn’t stop them from wishing that the cyclists are not there when and where they are actually driving.

It’s like knowing the guy that cleans your office toilet does a good thing but you still wouldn’t want him present at your office Christmas party. Selfish.

Imagine what the world would be like if everyone were say 10% less self centered?

Des

I’d rather have the toilet cleaner at my christmas party. Those guys can tell a good story or two, I bet !

'Fail to have lights or equipment"

I read that and lol’d, but then a more serious thought struck me…what sort of equipment are we supposed to be carrying…other than the usual
