Reverse Rotafix NOT doing the trick

Yo,

Changing rear cog, couldn’t get lockring off - LBS did that in the end - but didn’t have a chainwhip to get the cog off - Took it home, chainwhip didn’t work, so i did the rotafix but turned wheel backwards to get it off… it won’t budge, no matter what i do… what next? I suppose it doesn’t matter if i ruin the thread cause the cog is rubbish anyway.

any help would be greatly apprecaitede…

Peas

forget the cog’s thread and worry about the hub thread

What i meant was the COG is rubbish, so i can’t ride it anyway - so i might as well try and get it off, if i ruin the hub thread in the process bad luck, but it wont be that bad cause it is not useable atm anyway.

Take the wheel off- wrap some chain around cog- put chain/cog/wheel into big vice - turn wheel remove cog.

LBS did that in the end - but didn’t have a chainwhip to get the cog off

they didn’t have a chainwhip in a bike store???

err, turning the wheel backwards will tighten the cog.

They said they don’t have much contact with fixed gear bikes… But you still need chainwhips for geared bikes dont you? I dunno, ill have to take it back, no way ima gunna get it off…

Really? But your cog loosens when you skid, or put backwards force? So wouldn’t it loosen when i turn the wheel backwards? Right Tighty - Lefty Loosey -

put the bike back together, don’t put the lock ring back on this is the important part, go outside and try and do some skidzz and see what happens.

The cog loosens off anti clockwise, the lockring clockwise. By spinning the wheel backward, the cog is tightening. Take the lockring off and do a skid. That should solve your problem.

Yeh aiight, ill pop some skids at the bball court tomo…

im turning the wheel counter clockwise using Roatfix - doesn’t that mean im turning the cog counter clockwise too?

Have you tried using some CRC??? i would have thought that was a logical first option…

soak it (thread) in that really well for a night. make sure its the thread. Because what has happened is that there is most likely a seal created (alike to rust) b/n the cog and hub threads. You need to break this seal. Also, some direct hits with a hammer or solid metal object with some weight in it to the side of the cog should aid with this. do this after soaking for a while, make sure there is always a plentiful supply of your CRC or what ever lube you use (NOT chain lube!).

HOWEVER, before you use your chain whip or re-install make sure that ALL of the CRC has been removed from teeth of cog other wise slippage will occur, which will damage your chain or your hand if your using the chain whip.

good luck

If all else fails, set it on fire with an oxy torch, or some flammable liquid (not your CRC or WD40 as this will re-seal due to its properties) and a sig. lighter. that’l crack the seal!!

I tried a chain whip after some wd40 application - no success, then rotafixing - no success, skidding with the lockring off - no success. Everyone told me to take it to Sasha at Pony Bikes but I’m pretty stubborn and put it off for a bit, trying and failing by myself. When I did take it in, she had it off within seconds.

P.S. Go to a different LBS?

but seriously, lighting stuff on fire helps. breaks rust seals in seconds. brutish i know. but i have had stuff that could withstand about 160kg (2 people standing on it) then, heated it up through the use of fire, cooled it instantly and then was able to remove with just my arms. its brutish, but you could do it if you were careful enough.

I’m assuming you are looking at the wheel from the drive side…
Yes, you are turning the cog counter-clockwise too, but the chain is pulling the cog in the opposite direction - clockwise, i.e. righty tightey. Rotafix the cog and turn the wheel clockwise.

but seriously, lighting stuff on fire helps. breaks rust seals in seconds.

And can also change some of the properties of the metals and exacerbate flaws in it too. Not recommended. High penetrant lubricant is a better bet.

I’m hearing ya man… ill try it now - Been skidding all mornin… nothing… But after all the tightening i did yesterday, haha oh man…

when i first started riding fixed i loosened the cog doing skids and thought the hub was fucked. took it to the lbs who confirmed that it was…except, like you, they were turning it the wrong way!!!

went home swearing a lot and wondering what i was going to do. asked for help here and tightened the lockring at home myself. problem solved. i haven’t been back to that lbs very often recently…

Stop skidding and just use the leverage of the wheel to turn the thing the right way. Break the chain if you want, to be able to get a bit of a turn on the wheel before the chain grabs.

As soon as you break traction the force applied to the cog is minimal. If you are seriously going to keep skidding to do it. At least try and skid while sitting with your weight over the back wheel.

I feel really smart now.

+1 to bench vice.

Wrap your cog in old chain, put it in a vice and crank that shit up as tight as possible.

Then, turn that bitch, get two people to help, perhaps even yank it. This will produce as much force as your regular rotafix but with two people. If that doesn’t help, put on the biggest fucking tyre to add to the leverage.

If that doesn’t help, soak it in ammonia, wd40, whatever, overnight and repeat.
