Shimano R500 Wheelset

I am building my first geared road bike, I have the frame and the groupset, all I need to get rolling now is a decent/cheap wheelset.
I don’t care if they’re heavy wheels, I’m about 90kgs so they need to be strong.

I saw these…

What do people know about them? Any suggestions?

I’m trying to keep the cost at or below $200.

Cheers.

do it man, they aren’t anything fancy, but they get the job done. Also they are all standard parts, so replacement is easy.

As an aside, you weigh 90 kilos? Dayum.

I’d like to think that it’s because I’ve got mad cycling legs, but sadly that just isn’t true… I was much leaner when I was single.

Yes they weigh a ton, but have had a couple of sets for a few years and they are bullet proof, good thing is being a “traditional” type wheel they are easy to true.
I have lost a bit of weight, but was over 90kg for a long time, used them a fair bit with 28mm tryes on across unpaved roads, haven’t broke them yet.
One of my better bike bit bargain buys.

i love my set they are though but still alright and they handle the bumps well i flog my set they take it well and stay straight

One good thing about shimano wheels is they have no rider weight limit. You may find there is no warranty from online stores unless they were purchased locally.
Price is not far off retail so may have come off a new bike.

FWIW I had a a pair for a short while and I fvcken hated 'em - I found 'em too flexy* and all my favourite tires were a stupidy tight fit.

(but I am a fat bastard, at a relatively petite 90kegs you might be OK )

So true.

What happened to you coming to Sydney?

They’re only a 20/24 spoke count, and low-end Shimano wheels don’t have a great reputation. At 90kg, I’d be inclined to go for something with a higher spoke count.

$130 @ Torpedo7

My Shimano wheels have 16 spoke front - many thousands of kms over 3 years and still dead straight. I’m 95kgs.

^$130! Get them.

What’s the spoke count on the rear? The rear takes much more weight than the front (as well as drive forces).

+1

Although most of the cheap factory wheels these days tend to go for the lowish spoke counts- Fulcrum racing 7s etc

Ideally a person of your weight should be running a 32/36H rear IMO.

you will regret buying them, cheap and nasty

super flexy under load, not designed to last

20 - they are ultegra level though.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I have ended up going with some Mavic Aksium’s that I got for under 300 shipped. Pretty happy with that, and I’ve heard good things about them. Admittedly I did spend a little more than originally planned, but it wouldn’t be a proper bike build if I didn’t!

San Esteban - Trip got delayed, I am thinking some time in April now. Maybe ANZAC weekend.

Good choice. I had these on my road bike for years- never had a problem with them and they stayed true. Sure they´re not light but the wheel was very reliable.

Aren´t the 2010 version down to something like 1750grams which is not too bad…

Wish you’d mentioned earlier that you were considering Aksiums! I’ve got a new set I’m about to sell, and would have expected less than $300 for them. (Bought a bike that came with them, but also bought more expensive wheels to replace them.)

Ah wadda ya do? I’m sure you’ll sell them easy enough.
