Sleeping set ups

Geez, no trouble then with me being 5’9" on a good day. Not going to lie the white and orange combo was a factor.

I think I’m going to get one of these:

Full length zip is appealing can unzip and use as quilt in summer or over the top of my other bag in winter, very similar weight, bulk and warmth to the Sea to Summit, cheaper, but no hood which I don’t think I’d use in summer anyway.

Looks pretty good eh.

Z packs one is similar weight / packed size toooo

Without looking it up, I’d guess it would cost way more though (but be excellent quality).

yep, Z-packs one is almost twice the price, but is warmer, lighter, better, have to wait as each one is (semi) custom made.

My sleeping setup is now complete - my recon 5 sleeping bag arrived yesterday. Just rigged it up in my backyard with my bivvy and sleeping mat and some limited string to keep the bivvy off my face.
I had to use a lawn chair because there aren’t any branches but it worked ok.
The recon 5…damn. I was wearing only basketball shorts and in three minutes I was sweating my ass off.

ordered, will report back
arrived in 5 days from Poland!

Got some new equiptment.

  • Thermarest
  • Yeti Passion One Sleeping bag
  • Sea To Summit Aeros

Just gotta sort shelter out & I’m set.

I finally had the chance to test my sleeping setup during the week. It was a bit warm inside the tent where everyone else was sleeping so I tied the bivvy bag up outside and slept under the stars. I had to use the mozzie net but it worked out great, and there was enough room inside the bivvy for my sleeping bag so when it got cold around 2am I could crawl into that. Awesome sleep!

Just ordered one of these:

(SMD Lunar Duo Explorer. Not my pic.)

Has more headroom than the Tarptent Double Rainbow or the Lightheart Duo, for a similar weight (1.2kg all up). Plenty of room for my wife & I plus two hiking packs inside the tent, away from possums.

Already have:

  • a winter Mont sleeping bag (around 1kg)
  • an Exped Synmat UL7 mat (super comfortable, ten million times better than my old foam one)
  • a tiny inflatable Exped Pillow (best one I’ve found yet)

Not the lightest collection of gear but it’s not like I’m adventure racing. Mostly just weekend bushwalking. If I can organise an overnight bike trip or two this year I’ll be very happy.

That’s nice, i’m a big fan of these types of tents.
I need to get a picture of my latest setup. Single pole lightweight tent, can be used without the fly if the weather is good. Well under 1kg with groundsheet, inner and fly.

Thinking about getting a hammock for a few summer overnighters I might have coming up.

Looking at getting one of these - sounds great, made in Tasmania, comes with tree straps, etc. Might’ve seen someone recommend Tier Gear before. Anyone had experience with this particular hammock?

EDIT: bought it cos yolo and I sold a few law textbooks instead of burning them.

Own and can recommend. Still take a sleeping pad though as the cold really whips you on your back. Takes a bit of getting used to sleeping in hammocks but I doubt I’ll ever hike with a tent again.

Good buying, my bro has the goshawk and it’s the biz, get the double layer if you’re not using an under-quilt, survival blanket will work in place of a mat somewhat

Bugs tho? Wouldn’t you want a fly net?

Can sew one in later, Noseeum and YKK is cheap or get the condom hammock love sock http://www.warbonnetoutdoors.com/blackbird-traveler-accessories/

Sweet, yep I’m probably going to get a NoSeeUm love sock thingo further down the line. Next weekend I’ll just put my trust in some repellent

Only photo I managed of my setup (8x10 terra rosa tarp) during a climbing trip to the Blueys over the weekend was this early AM self timer which I look super stoked about. No condensation on anything (had rained all day and was a moist night). Also I cooked my breakfast without getting out of my sleeping bag which is sweet.

Pitch was essentially a half pyramid which will be my go to for now. Found it much less fiddly than an A-frame (I pitched at 10pm after a exhausting day and was set up and packed down before my mates with tents) and more room to sit up.

I’m going to be grabbing one of these soon. Super light and simple and can get it local in Melb cbd. http://www.backpackinglight.com.au/store/dd-hammocks-superlight-mosquito-net/dp/12353
