Soma Wolverine build

Order a light / taillight for your dyno?

Already on backorder, and I missed out on the cheaper 66euro price for the front by a day, was a bit gutted, currently at 99euro for the front light.

Changed the gearing to 44:18 = ~67 gear inches, with a Blackburn DH chainring, Surly 18T cog and a Shimano HG-40 chain. Last week I had dropped the stem down another 10mm, still mucking around with cockpit setup, but don’t think I can go much lower than this.

Geoff, what tires do you have on that machine? Bon Jon Pass 35 or Barlow Pass 38? And what’s your take on them?

I love the shitty lock.

Barlow Pass 38’s, IIRC it’s the heavier version of the two types available that Spirito had on hand when I dropped him a line. Comfy as it gets, only one flat in 1300kms, a double from a thorn and piece of metal at the same time. Looking for something with more puncture resistance, but weight becomes an issue. Would like some of the new 40mm Maxxis Re-Fuse.

I’ve done the Schwalbe Duremes in 50mm without guards with no issue and Bennett ran 29x2.0" knobbies (WTB’s??) on the gravel ride as well. Went looking last night, thinking a set of Maxxis Wormdrive in 42 for hardpack courses and Maxxis Rambler in 40mm for most Brisbane courses will work for when I MonsterX it.

Just stops the walk by grab and snatch when I drop into a shop (rarely) during my commutes. The U-lock slots into the front rack when we go for family rides and I lock the bikes together, just no need to carry that weight on a normal ride.

Follow up.

Jumped on Bennett’s bike on Tuesday, it’s the 56cm, perfect size for me if I was just doing MonsterX.

If Nicole gets that second kid she’s after then my foresight of a 58cm will come to fruition, I’ll need to grab Zach’s Jones bar, some XT brakes and work out what to do with the gearing so I can fit the Yepp mini on the front.

Also currently on the lookout for a 80-90mm 0 degree rise stem to suit, the current one looks pants and I want to move up one spacer and go 0 rise for a similar position.

Yo Seb I’ve got the Bon Jon 35 extra lights (black sidewall) on my Ritchey commuter/cross and, like Geoff, can’t say enough good things about them. Crazy comfy, I’m slowly dropping the pressures and there getting better I recon. I’m about 80kgs atm and 60 psi is so good, their still fast and roll for dayzzzzzz, seriously if they weren’t so wide they’d be as fast any race tyre out there… or pretty bloody close anyway.

Thanks. I’m on the lookout for wider tires for the Kumo, currently running 32’s and it’s a bit sketchy on rough gravel. 38’s won’t be cleared at the fork but 35’s might, and being a fan of Grand Bois those Compass look like good candidates.

Also I reckon I have a black Thomson x4 that could work out for you. Will check tonight.

Any idea where these are available? I rate the refuse as far as weight/puncture resistance goes. I’m running the 28’s at the moment and want to go fatter

I love the compass tyres on your soma geoff, can’t risk nice tyres on dodgy glass-ridden roads around here though.

I can only find them on eBay from the States or Universal Cycles online.

Based on availability date on Universal Cycles, it could be that it’s just not in the marketplace yet. They have the Maxxis Rambler which was announced at the same time, and you can get that from Pushys as well.

Pushy’s has 2.0 in 27.5 cheap if your beard game is strong. Also Schwalbe has a new errythang tyre the “big one”… had quick look, seems like all Schwalbe’s, excellent grip, speed, protection and will last for about 5 mins on the rear :frowning:

I’ve been avoiding Schwalbe MTB tires for a while due to the overly soft rubber compounds they use, they just don’t stand up to terrain I ride.

There’s also the Maxxis Beaver - good for heavy conditions, available in 29x2.0" with EXO and TR.

So the B&M IQ-X finally turned up and the Secula Plus came with it. I installed them on the weekend.

Bit of spare cable at the moment.

Weird that the rear lights wiring isn’t next to each other.

They work great. The IQ-X puts out a shed load of light and the Secula Plus lights up red all around the light, including the clear plastic bit of the lens.

The mechanical engineering guys at work are nutting out a bracket for the IQ-X to be mounted on the front of the Globe Porteur rack. A P-clamp would work, but I’ll see what they come up with, they wanted a challenge. I do like this welded on one for the front of a Tubus Tara rack, but it sounds like they’ll be working on something that will clamp on that I can then bolt the light straight to.

I need to now thread the single strand co-ax cable I have through the fork and drop Blakey a line about those connectors he said he had to allow me to disconnect the lights when needed.

Plan is also to get the Secula Plus Mudguard light in the future when I get some new guards (SKS Bluemels in black and 65mm width) to replace the current ones which I’m now pretty sure are for a Townie Electra 26 with Fat Frank 3" tires. The current rear light is fine, but I now see why Blakey says not to get it, it’s a pretty shitty mount onto the bike, just using half a round curved bit of plastic and a zip tie.

secula mudguard for wherever you put it on the bike. stay version is pants.

drop me a line and I’ll see if I can find the connectors for you.

PM sent.

A++ pics and story. I’m following this with interest as I just got a Secula plus for the Kumo (of the fender-attaching variety) and looking to connect it to my system. But I’m a total noob with dyno lights/sparky work in general, currently trying to read and understand how these things work.

I made a brake bridge mount for secula mudguard using a bit of this.

3 squares worth top hole for main secula screw, bottom hole on brake hole, middle hole acts as a strain relief and an additional hole for the secula anti-rotation knob. Hacksaw and file to ensure it doesn’t extend beyond bridge.

Tried to take a pic in the dark.

Man I need to clean my bike

This B&M mounting bracket works for the Secula Plus mudguard version. Pete got one earlier last year.

I’ve got one of those on my other canti bike mounted at seat post binder. Works well but I reckon my brake bridge mount looks better on the calliper brake bike.
