Looking for a crank/chainwheel for my old track frame, I cannot tell the difference between Sugino RD and Sugino Mighty Comp (apart from cosmetics). Both same chainline assuming identical BB’s, same chainwheel PCD, same range of crank length options, etc. What’s the diff?
First post, so please forgive, or at least may death come quickly; I did search, however searching all the terms gave no results and just Sugino was 20+ pages of results. Cheers in advance for advice.
As I understand the Sugino RD’s (road rouble) give a shit chainline unless you run the chainring on the inside of the spider. This is what I had to do to get a good chainline on my old fuji track anyway. Also I thought RD’s were 130bcd and mighty comps were 144bcd. I’d go with a set of mighty comps because I like the look of them. That said the RD’s are a strong reliable crankset.
I obviously know very little on the subject so I’m hoping someone more knowledgable chimes in.
Thanks for the reply. Sounds fair enough, but the Sugino website seems to suggest that on the same bottom bracket and set up as a single chain wheel, the chain line will be the same on both the RD and the Mighty Comp. seems like if the RD is no good in that regard, the Mighty Comp will be no better. Hmm
Except that the RD has to run the ring on the inside of the spider (small ring position) instead of the outside on the mighty comp.
So you gotta ask yourself: do you want the chainring on the inside or the outside of the spider? Outside always looks best imho.
Thanks, that makes sense. It’s pretty devious the way they show the picture of the RD crank with the Messenger ring fitted to the outside on the website if it needs to be fitted to the inside to deliver the stated chain line.
So you’re saying that the RD chain line with the ring on the inside is the same as the Mighty Comp chain line with the ring on the outside? Good to know, ta,
