Sugino cranksets RD2 v XD2

Whats the difference between these two? I think that the RD2 looks prettier, but I am unable to find any plain english explanation of what makes them different.

Im currently doing up an old road bike conversion as a bit of a summer project and I dont want to spend a fortune, however I have had some issues in the past with cheap cranksets loosening.

I did a search, but as you can imagine about 10000 threads showed up (sugino on a fixed gear forum? go figure).

Cheers and thanks

i did a google image search for both.

based on my very brief look i’d say the RD2 is a track/single speed crankset, whereas the XD2 seems to be a road crankset with multiple chainrings…

but, yeah, very brief look on my part

Ive got an XD2 on my fixed, the main difference is that one of the chainring bolts is located under the drive side arm on the XD2, can be a pain in the ass if you change chain rings often. From memory the BCD on the RD2 is 130mm and the XD2 is 110mm.

I’d be leaning towards the RD2. Same BCD as the Sugino Messenger cranks therefore easier to get chainrings….

RD is 130bcd and slightly better made, as well as having easily accessable bolts.

XD is 110bcd and can take two chainrings if you want to use it for roads, or single works as well. Plenty of road and bmx chainrings (inc sugino chainrings) are found at 110bcd, so its used by many polo players to get lower ratios. Still ok quality. I think they began as cranks for tandem bikes but are a good lower price option for single speeds and fixed.

Define “slightly better made”

Cheers for the help! I was leaning towards the RD2, but i wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on a good deal with the XD2s
