Is mavic the obvious choice? These are going on a vintage build and I have a sense the non box-like shape may not help.
I’ll be ordering tonight so any opinions, veiws, experiences will be appreciated.
Searched the forum, found a few but wasn’t compared with these options, sorry about this topic of wheel sets being discussed and popping up yet again.
thanks in advance
I don’t know what frame you’re building up but if its a nice vintage frame then my opinion is to do it once and do it right.
Therefore if its a good frame, do it justice and put a decent wheelset on it. Save up for the Open Pros with whatever hubs if that is what you really want.
Bikes been delayed for ages and i just want to get it on the street. I don’t have a job, and I’m currently doing exams. So I just need the best option.
Bike build is nothing amazing…
Frame is metallic blue, so it is a possibility, although I’m not a fan of machined side walls with a little bit of the color showing.
Could you post a picture? I think this would end up costing more because of spokes, hubs, and a wheel builder to put it together
I have the M13II’s laced to NOS Superbe hubs for my Hetchins rebuild. Closest I could find to a traditional polished box section rim without searching for NOS Mavics etc.
Nothing wrong with them, they’re not shit. The CR18s are wider if you’re planning on running tyres closer to the 30mm+ spectrum.
Just looking at getting these for the F(ake) Moser. I’m a bit sick of “deep” wheels, and these fit in my budget. Won’t be running anything bigger than a 28c on it.
Change the bearings of those formulas out for some nicer Japanese or Swiss bearings, pop the bearing covers, add a bit of dura ace grease with some thin oil in the mix…
…Worst thing about cheap hubs for me, is the hardware that rusts, the shit bearings, and the lockring thread which you can easily break by tightening the lockring too hard…Formulas aren’t as bad as some of the hubs they make as OEMs, though…
I’ve been running Formula’s laced to silver Mavic CXP-22’s on one of my bikes for ages with no problem, and that’s through some pretty crap weather. I’d get the same set up again, but the bloody black Mavic’s have a silver braking surface, and I want all black rims.
Sun rim’s it is. Let’s hope our dollar stays strong.
