surly cross-check + surly steamroller

Steamroller:

Badass crosscheck!

62cm and a riser stem? How tall are you?!

haha 6’4"
riser stem on both to get the bars at the same height as the saddle. defiantly could have used lots of spacers, but a high rise stem looks cool imo

hes a man monster! nice couple of rides you have there!

45’s!!! Awesome. You could ride through walls with that thing!

nice surlys, just a question for you or any other streamroller riders still rocking the stock alex DA22 rims - how do the 700x35 randonneurs go?

cheers

they fit fine. i reckon you could fit up to a 40c tire on the stock rims without any problems.
the 35c rando has to be my fav tire i’ve used too

I realise they’re quite different bikes but do you find much difference in the frames between the two? I ask because I’m considering buying a cross check to run mainly as a fixie but then with the ability to convert to a bit of a tourer bike.

either frame would suit you imo, just depends on what you exactly want.
the crosscheck will give you more options such as gears, racks, fenders, brakes and tire clearance.
the steamroller while being nice and simple is still versatile and could also be used for touring etc (eg something like Surly Steamroller, drivetrain side, 42x16. on Flickr - Photo Sharing!) but if you want racks/panniers you’re probably better off with the crosscheck
both feel similar to me in terms of ride quality (on the road). after riding the crosscheck, the steamroller feels pretty quick and snappy though. i feel comfortable on both bikes after longer rides, but i prefer the crosschecks slightly more relaxed geo on those rides…

cross-check in 2x2 mode:

Cool, cheers for that. I really like the Cross Check in terms of it’s versatility but then again I really like the clean lines of the steamroller… Choices choices.

Me trying to get on that steamroller was the funniest shit.
I’m like 5’11"

What bars have you got on each bike? I’m not as tall as you, 6’2", and have bullhorns right now, but looking for something like you have where I can get forward and out of the saddle but also have a comfortable angle for cruising or long distance.

I’m guessing you’ve experimented with bars. Any tips? History?

On-One Midge (crosscheck)
Soma 3 speed (steamroller)

Both provide really upright positions lol.

I currently have Salsa Bell Lap bars on the Steamroller. They offer a fairly stretched out position riding on the hoods and they’re fairly comfortable too. First (road) drop bar where I’ve used the drops haha.
Can’t help you with your bar choice that much haha… sounds like a regular drop bar w/ hoods is what you’re after though.
