Yeah - I saw that. Only problem is every she is only person saying it didn’t burn down. That and nobody else anywhere in the world is selling new genuine Atomics (that I could find).
Agreed, the cafe roma is a very cheap and cheerful start. I had mine for 6+ years. I could get almost-microfoam out of it.
Don’t backflush them as they dont have a three-way valve to vent the pressure… you’ll only end up damaging it. Descale is cool. I used citric acid but was then advised to only use a commercial cleaner as acids like citric and vinegar will etch the aluminium bits : ie the thermoblock.
+1 (again on the grinder)
Your machine sounds awesome! (really ‘only’ a boiler or is it a HX?) and Haha re: the grinders you mentioned… that’s some serious cash.
I’m rocking the cafe roma at home. I am heading down this arv to get yet another group seal for the thing cause it keeps chewing them up. I try to keep the grounds off the sealing edge on the basket but I still keep ripping the seal to shreds after a few months. to get a decent cup out of it you really have to pack it right up to the lip.
has anyone found a cheap source of seals for these? online perhaps?
Yeah - I settled on the grind I’m on now after having it a bit finer initially but maybe I should try the finer grind again without filling the basket right up. thx for the suggestion.
The only easy source for the seals I found was the Breville service agents listed ontheir website. The one in Ashburton was happy to post them out to me. I think I bought three last time, so I didn’t have to keep going back to them. Watch that the bakelite collar doesn’t crack too - it’s a common flaw and I went through two of them in the time I used my Cafe Roma. You’ll know when it does…
+1 to finer grind, dose less. And get a decent tamper too to make sure that you’re making the most of what you’re dosing into the basket - the plastic tamper is’nt up to the job. Oh, and the unpressurised basket is larger than the standard single, which also helps (hint, hint, get an unpressurised basket).
If you want you can take the dodgy option and drill out the bottom layer of the std basket to unpressurise it. Just don’t drill through both layers. It helps if you have a sharp bit and a drill press.
Yea you’ve been there too Stk - the collar (or ramp as service guy called it) went on me last year. still it was easy and cheap to fix.
So you can get standard baskets that fit these without the double wall? I’ve been meaning to look into this.
I did attempt to hack the double shot one apart but gave up before totally writing it off.
Yup, the standard basket is a part from an earlier Breville model. From memory, the code for the part is the ESP 2/51. It’s a single cup basket (Breville call it a 1/2 cup). Don’t buy the double basket (3-4 cup) as it’s too deep for your group handle. I got mine from the Breville factory outlet in Huntingdale (MEL), but it was aparently their last one. I’ve heard of others who have got one via mail directly from Breville. Mine cost me $9.
