The small joys today thread (a bit of Yang for FoA Yin of late)

I had to sell my drum kit that I grew up with a few weeks prior, was seriously bummed as lack of space and no where to play (and needing money for my business) resulted in me letting it go.

The week after, I decided that considering my studio is in a 9 floor abandoned building in the cbd surrounded by other abandoned/soon to be demolished buildings, I could bash drums anywhere there at any hour… Cue a look on Gumtree, a $90 drum kit later, a few new skins and all the extra left over shit from my other kit… And now I have Sydney’s best jam room on the top floor of a building in the CBD (we only use the first floor as it is the only one with power, so we ran a long extension cord up the stairs). We moved it up there after we realised architects + live music in the same studio space wasnt mutually agreeable. The walk up 9 floors by the stairs is getting us fit (there’s no toilet/running water up there, it is an old caretakers apartment, but no longer serviced)

Another architect has his electric and amp in there too, but doesnt stick around often for drinks. We had normal friday drinks as usual, and a friend of a friend said he played guitar a lot in high school. After another few beers, and a few hours of music, we now have a band, and Im back to playing music 2-3 nights a week with a variety of people, who all love the ability to play somewhere (and play loud) with no fear of neighbours or noise complaints.

…and sweet rooftop party gigs every friday.

Small joys (and life wins).

^ reading that makes me happy. seriously nothing better than having a permanent place to play and leave gear set up.

I had a small joy when I realised that being an adult with a job means I can afford to pay for a regular jam space with storage.

Summertime (almost), walking to a rehearsal studio, playing for a few hours with friends, drinking a couple of beers, walking home = Life Joy

If you feel like playing sometime in the city let me know. #foaband.

I work most nights there on my own private work, and the musical side of procrastination is so much more useful than any other.

(…and sadly not permanent, building is demolished next March, will be a sad, sad day.)

I rode around in the sun at lunchtime getting stuff for my wife’s bike. I was in work trousers that I can barely pedal in, in desert boots on Time ATACS, but goddamn it was good. Got some sweet track stands on my CX bike too.

Pair of these?

went out riding in 50kph + winds. 3 strava KOMs!

later my mate went out and tried to steal them - not even close.

its the small wins in life…

A nice promo girl just gave me a sample of one of my favorite butters.

You can only butter something with butter.

My girls have been sick for a while so today I took a day off to look after them while my wife was at prac. I thought it would be hectic but the youngest slept most of the day and the eldest is almost all better so we had awesome daddy-daughter time, cooking, playing cards, drawing and chasing butterflies. Awesome day off.

Rode home along the yarra in the sunshine via the freewall. Enjoying the early finishes the new job is brining.

To top it off 3 little birds got stuck in my head as I was cruising along.

i cleaned my computer keyboard.

fuck it feels good now.

It’s not even 7:30 and I’m in bed watching Archer.

Gave blood.

Ate three packets of Savoys, two sausage rolls, one bag of chips, drank two iced chocolates and one apple juice.

I didn’t want to faint.

We foster dogs for the lost dogs home. Mainly on rehab or surgery recovery.
New dude called Ritchie greeted me today with sick madness like he had known me for years.
Our own dog Elvis thinks this ones a keeper.
Shame he is only here for 2 weeks but someone is gonna love the little rocker.

E

today the mad hippie posted, for the first time in what seems like years.

Had the same thought.

More mad hippie!

My new skateboard is at the post office waiting to be picked up and the new bars for my wife’s bike are at Treadly, I’ll get them on the way home.

I’m also wasting the afternoon reading about Heath Kirchart’s non skateboarding adventures with his friends at We’re Really Doing It

i love that on this page there is someone giving blood, someone volunteering to walk dogs… and zoltan getting a new skateboard and a handlebar!

Lol
