... this thread's gone to the Dogs

Yeah, I thought it was more like 8 or 9?

Anyway, more photos of Molly enjoying the lawn we recently laid.

Found out yesterday that our Frenchie can swim

Apparently they aren’t real good at it/cant swim at all, so i’ve been searching for a doggie life jacket, but we walked her in the pool yesterday and she loved it!

Some people may not have seen this coming being all about cats. But over the last few months I have been thinking about owning a dog. I am not too keen on any sort of breed, I feel that I can possibly get a dog that will suit my lifestyle and be a good mate to just chill out with when we aren’t out exploring. So I am thinking about a dog that can come along on rides with me (mountain bike) and be able to run for a good hour with stoppages.

I know that running constantly can cause hip problems in some breeds, and also that the weather will play a massive part in being able to take the dog out on rides. A husky would be perfect in the winter, but I would probably kill it if I were to take it out riding in summer. Collies are coming up in my search a bit - but I am a little uneasy as the exercise that these dogs need is a lot more than I could probably give it (not being able to ride/run everyday).

Also I would probably want a bit of a chilled dog - one that doesn’t want attention all of the time and is happy to lie inside on a mat and watch a movie.

Am I being a little bit full on here? Do these dogs exist?

My dog will run along for about 20mins at full pelt before slowing down, and he loves it. He’s a Lab/Staffy. My mate’s Kelpie will run on the mountainbike trails up at Mt Beauty all day. More than he’d ride. My dog is good at chilling out on the couch. His dog snot so good at that. They’re both great dogs though, and are very much loved.

I don’t think there’s a dog that will do both. Energetic Kelpies/Border Collies are great dogs as trail dogs, and excellent friends. They’re happier with exercise though.

Go to a shelter and get a dog that you like and that likes you.

Tailoring breeds traits to what you want just doesn’t work, as they are all different. I have two mutts, similar size, similar breed. One loves sleeping, the other will run all day.

Of course some dogs won’t be suitable for your lifestyle, but don’t lock yourself into a breed.

^ best advice.

Yup - whatever I decide to do (cat or dog) it will be from RSPCA.

But I guess I want to make sure that I am going to have a dog that can provide the best life for at the same time. I don’t want to get something that will be miserable sitting in the yard whilst I am working late.

Sounds like you need 2 dogs.

Naaah… just one of these.

Whippet? Apprently their lazy as shit.

Mutts for sure, lab x something

I have a lab x kelpie, and she’s energetic when she wants to be, but is quite happy spending the evenings sleeping. She just needs a walk pretty much everyday.

just got a lab x blue heeler…and he does the crazy/chill combo well so far (it’s been a week though…and he’s been sick…who knows what will happen)

Good man

Also keep in mind some patience and a bit of a learning curve for you & the pet might be needed. Medo was a shelter dog, was going to be put down the afternoon I rolled in there to look for my parents lost cat (never found it).

It was a wild call. He was big, unruly and quite a handful. It took me a while to settle him down and learn about discipline … close to year. I have had quite a few dogs but he was strong/stubborn. He was fine with all of us, and all the animals on my parents farm and the neighbouring dogs but I could never socialize him with 100% confidence. He would never start with another dog, but if a big male approached him he’d react badly some times. That meant that we/he was limited when he was out or about and we’d have to keep an eye out at all times. We walked him at night and never had him off leash when out.

What I’m getting at is I had limited experience (I think I’d be better now) and whilst I love shelter dogs and think it’s the coolest thing, you do have to be prepared to stick it through and be patient with the dogs, some of which may have had issues from other owners or just needed better understanding about their behaviour. It’s not always easy, but it is so worthwhile.

fwiw, I also agree with mutts being the best. Pure breeds are all with problems.

p.s. cats are cool too !!

Thanks for everyones input. This is on the long term radar - first things first is getting a new house with a larger yard so the future animal run about with it’s snout out.

Went to a Frenchie meet on the weekend. Didn’t win the fashion parade. :frowning: good fun had by all, especially Penelope who crashed for the whole arvo before coming to life at about 10pm again.

Does anyone here have a border collie?

nickj’s mum has one. Megdog.

Hugo / Huge / Hugs has two.
