Lots of good bike shops in Invercargill, so no doubt one will be able to get you a bike box. Personally Iād fly. bloody long way to Chch (would take 8hrs in a car or 10hrs by bus).
Air NZ allows bike boxes as a standard checked bags as long as its below 20kg. I usually buy 2 bags that has by brevet gear covered easy - fwiw my bike was approx 26kg including water and food for the KB.
Can recommend the Tower Lodge in Invercargill if you want a nice place to stay once youāve all finished up. Recently did some work down there and was put up there. Not the cheapest but its really good.

Great if you have a small or medium 29er and canāt fit bottles even with a half frame bag -might as well go full frame bag and this option.

Yep. But having ridden some of that terrain I have to take my hat off to him. Off-road fixed is nuts - just ask Tom or Angry. Even if you do have legs for it, you have to contend with pedal strike shudders. Yeah nah, Iāll take my freewheel thanks

Thereās a big crowd of them in New Plymouth - one dude from there did a TransAmerica on a 36" IIRC. I remember doing a critical mass there years ago chuckles and he was there with a whole gang of teeny unicycling fanboys following him round as if he was the pied piper. 
Iām with Paul on the bivy vs tent thing. And also the synthetic sleeping bag.
Pretty cool. Will be interesting to follow his peregrinations.

Itās a short trip that takes us into the giant Kauris. -which are worth a stop Adam/Tom, Tane Mahuta and the four sisters are pretty amazing.
