Unsealed bottom bracket on the street.

I’m running an Ofmega unsealed bottom bracket on the street on the bike I ride every day to work. How bad is this to do when it’s wet? Will I just have to service it more often? I don’t really want to replace the BB cause it matches the cranks (Ofmega Mistral). if I did have to replace it, does anyone know what BB will match my crankset and give me perfect chainline? I have no idea where it’s ISO or JIS and the cranks can’t be removed with a conventional crank puller.

Do they have some weird French thread?

I would say unsealed BB on the street is fine, as long as you are prepared to maintain it regularly.

Nah. I’m not sure how it works, but you take off the dust cap, remove the bolt and screw in the crank puller, and there’s nothing for the puller to push against to remove the crank arm. It’s quite strange.

Are you sure you have a BB installed :? :stuck_out_tongue: the puller is meant to push against the end of the BB axle. Pic please.

There’s definitely a BB installed.

The axle doesn’t stick out at all, so the puller can’t push against it.

No pics, I’m at work.

usually there’s a washer that sits between the crank bolt head and the end of the spindle - is that what you’re looking at?

it’ll sit pretty snug inside the crank, so you might not notice the difference.

Im pretty sure it will catch on fire if you use it on the street,

User “Plan_A” will attest to that

Nope, the washer came out with the crank bolt.

As for it catching on fire… I was more concerned about water getting in and ruining it.

You need to figure out whether it’s ISO or JIS (I’m guessing ISO but that’s a blind guess). Then you just need one that has the same spindle length as your current BB.

Hmmm…

Although according to Velobase, it’s ISO taper.

I’m assuming it’s this BB. The cranks are Ofmega Mistral.

Unsealed BBs are for the track. Not the tarck.

Unless you want to repack your BB every time you ride it in the rain (that is being a bit pedantic but you get the picture), which you clearly are unable to considering you do not have to correct tool (and who could be bothered anyway).

Sealed for street, loose ball for the track. Simple as that.

Phil Wood sell any taper or length you want and trust me, they are worth the money. I went through a couple of loose ball (yes I learnt from my mistake!) and a couple of Shimano sealed units (ultegra UN-72) before finally conceding. After almost a year I can not fault it. Unbelievable. And I am not even getting paid by Phil to say this.

So work out you spindle length and taper and see if you can track one down. Any sealed shimano type unit will last you in the mean time (and yes you can mix and match JIS and ISO as long as you are careful) unless you want to ruin the BB you already have.

Spinzzzz.

LOL

tim@philwood.com ?

Yeah, gotta hold off purchasing anything til I get back from Japan, but I guess I’ll be looking at getting a new BB, cause this is the bike I ride everyday, rain or no rain.

Bloody bikes!

Until, is there any other simple way I can keep water out…? Plastic bag over the bottom bracket?

According to this post on Tarckbike.com (oh the irony!), The Ofmega Mistral track crankset takes an 111mm ISO bottom bracket, such as a Campagnolo Veloce.

Bollocks! The world rode around on standard cup and cone bottom brackets for quite a few decades before sealed bearings came into vogue. Use a good grease and a bottom bracket sleeve, regrease it once a year and adjust correctly. Job done.

Are you sure you have the right crank puller? On square taper, like you said, “the axle doesn’t stick out at all” so you need a puller with a narrow head.

Check this thread… you need the one on top

i agree i have a sugino superlap in my velo racer and it has the dust cap and a lot of water proof grease, after winter i’ll pull it and re grease it but should only need doing every 6 months at most!

agree.

OK.

I am not going to argue. Because someone that has just spent $100+ on a BB that is not designed for the (ab)use they are employing it for is not going to admit their mistake! :stuck_out_tongue:

I am just thinking about all those beautiful loose ball track BBs here (same goes for loose ball track hubs). I am doing it for them.

Have a look at fixed gear culture as a whole- the whole scene is full of misused and misappropriated cycling detritus!

I mean, come on:
