OMG, you know it’s gone to the wall when big companies jump on board with shit like this.
Vans Authentic “Fixie” series. Made of Ballistic nylon with 3M reflective bits. They also come with a matching saddle bag that proves they’re way off the mark here. . . .
A lot of people do ride in Vans, so it doesn’t really bother me (Four of us rode in Era’s / Authentics on Saturday). I saw the white ones in Hype on Bourke street on the weekend. Nice shoes, I understand the whole point of them. I don’t understand paying $180 for a pair of Vans Era’s though, especially to ride in. Although if it was the black ones…
The other Cog & Chain ones look kinda cool (the black ones at least). I might try and get a pair from DQM when I’m in New York in a few weeks.
I’m waiting for the Gabe Morford ones though. Easily the best colourways (I said it again) and the hip pack is better than the saddle bag (in my opinion).
in the new ‘fixie eras’ i think they might actually use the thicker and stiffer sole from the oldskool.
have ridden a bit in my oldskools and its pretty good. more betterererer toebox aswell as I wear through the toes in my eras/authentics after a couple of months.
although i still ride my eras and authentics the most.
the gabe morford series is very nice, i really want the eras. too bad they are syndicate vans though, and will only be sold (maybe) at supply in sydney as they are the only store in aus with a syndicate account. and i assume they will be $180+
I agree they’re soft, and use them as an alternative to my beaten up old Nike Air Max Lites. Only reason they work is that I’ve worn the sole almost flat. No clip probs.
my Gazelles aren’t bad to ride in. They’ve gotten a fair bit softer, but have quite a narrow toe that fit clips well. My Vans Chuckas are pretty good too, a fair bit stiffer than the low cut types.
orchids kinda seem too big to use snuggly in toeclips, too much padding/laces and a pretty wide sole.
Although thats just what i can remember from owning some about 3 years ago, except they were only ridden on my BMX. other than that they were decent quality. (havn’t seen any of the latest 08/09 models though)
If your into more ‘skate’ style BMX shoes check out LOTEK aswell… really nice shoes and some killer designs goin on over there. they even do a lower profile shoe more like a pair of vans half cabs but with a stiffer sole that might go alright with toeclips. http://shop.lotekbrand.com/
