The sole on the lotek coastals is the thinnest POS I’ve ever ridden in. I would never ever recommend anyone these shoes.
I stopped riding my bmx in them after 2 weeks because my feet hurt too much riding in them.
Horrible shoes.
Yeah but seriously they are recessed so it doesn’t really bother me. I will get some SPDs for my fixed gear when I come across some cheap ones, I don’t really like clips & straps at all.
Get a life & realise that there is something a bit more important than the latest fucken gimmick from Vans. If you can’t see the gimmick, you pretty thick.
Wear whatever the fuck you like & be individuals for fuck sake.
Dude, if you enjoy wearing shimano shoes go for it (try time cleats instead of spd’s)
I have the aforementioned ‘fixed gear’ vans… got em for cheap(er) on the other side of the world and then made my work pay for them as ‘cycling shoes’ (we got a personal health and fitness allowance as a company benefit).
I wouldnt have paid for them otherwise (and i’d certainly not have paid $180!), but i’ll confirm the sole is considerably stiffer than any of the other skate vans… and the toe box material a lot tougher. i have some other eras that i have had for half the time and they look 3x older. Eras and slipons are super soft…
+1000 on the stiffer sole being good. much better for riding in clips from an efficiency/power perspective, still not as good as clipless but much better. (FWIW i own sidi dominators/time atacs as a comparison).
as for loteks… the new coastals and nightwolfs have a very similar look to the normal vans but the sole is pretty different. as stiff as the ‘fixed’ vans, and equally as padded… and ive seen a bunch of my friends who ride brakeless bmx thrash them for a bit. i tried the coastals on and the sole seemed as thick as the AV eras.
the macaframa guys have been wearing the 09 nightwolfs and love them… they seem to get them to last for a comparative while.
George: you were the one that said you had tried to get a pair through your work… and failed.
Question for the messengers: Can you claim footwear as a tax deductible expense as it is work equipment (a la steel toed boots for construction)? if so, wouldnt ‘bike shoes’ fall under this category?
Yeah I got a pair whilst in Copenhagen. In fact I’m wearing them right now. They were about the same price as everywhere else, but I was on holidays in the whole “I’m on holidays, I’m going to spend all the money I saved up!” mode. But yeah, they feel stronger than other Era’s (leather and canvas), the toe box seems to hold up a lot better, and the sole is noticeably thicker. It made my canvas Era’s feel so thin when I swapped shoes.
I’m down with Vans making “fixed shoes” (these, the Chain & Sprocket, Gabe Morford shoes). I’d rather see it than Jay Jay’s making a “fixie” shirt (and don’t worry, it will happen).
