have done the rounds via the search… and there are a few folks here pointing people to VO gear when looking for replacement parts etc…
but I am curious what the general feeling amongst the aficionados  here is about the quality of VO branded components… BBs, headsets, etc etc compared to other reasonable-high quality gear…
it sure looks nice… like the look of their 1" threaded headset
It’s good. I have a two bolt seatpost, 2 stems, porteur bars, squeal free brake pads, zeppelin fenders, saddle bag…Chris K is sourcing parts for everyday cyclists, and parts to restore old machines (excellent threadless BBs, French headsets, TA styled cranks), plus subtly branded, classic looking parts, that perform as well or better than the ne plus ultra of modern parts at substantially lower prices.
Some parts are old moulds being dusted off, others are brand new engineering, but it’s all quality.
Get it from Commuter Cycles, & Human Powered Cycles in Melbourne, Cheeky Monkey in Sydney. Commuter have a good selection of stock on hand, and also a Polyvalent frame hanging up (and the S/S porteur rack that makes me drool like the beardo bike nerd I am)
I’ve bought a fair bit of their stuff and have been happy. Their stuff is simple and well priced … bang for buck. I also don’t mind spending coin with a smaller company like Velo Orange as I know they try hard to offer products that are practical and perhaps forgotten by other manufacturers. I also think their ordering system is excellent.
Some are, some aren’t. The Yen-USD rate makes it very expensive to source Sugino/Nitto/etc parts now, similar to what killed the last bike boom. Rivendell are suffering with this too.
Many VO parts are made in Taiwan, at small outfits that produce very high quality product. In a lot of cases, the small design changes being made greatly improve quality / weight / function over the ‘classic’ parts.
Follow the blog to see what’s coming up and what’s in stock.
Well … you can use anything from one to four chainrings. The latter would be nuts of course, but possible. I just dig that one of the oldest and most widely adaptable crank system/design is yet again given a new life.
And there’s already plenty of old chainrings out there to suit this crank … steel and alloy. Seeing the direction all other cranks and BB’s are heading I’m glad Kulcinski’s looking back for inspiration.
You gets what you pay for. It certainly works and looks good. If you want bike jewelry then you have to pay Phil Wood, Paul Components or Campagnolo prices. My campy headset looks (and costs) a million dollars and performs about the same as my cheapo Velo Orange headset which costs about 1/10th the price. I don’t wish to have $1000 dollars worth of headsets fitted to the 5 bikes I ride so the $19 Velo Orange headset is indeed something I regularly give thumbs up for
