Vibration on crank and chain

Hi all,

Whenever I start to pedal at a faster rate, I can feel a lil bit of a vibration on my right pedal where the chains and crank is. Is this something I should be worried about? Is it something that I can do to stop the vibration?

It’s not really an issue just a bit annoying coz it’s doesnt feel as smooth as i thought it would be

That’s a pretty non-descript problem. What is a faster rate? Approx 60 rpm? 120rpm?

What have you done to try and fix it so far?

Is everything tightened properly? BB, cranks, pedals? Put the frame on the ground and try to wiggle each of those items in turn.

Is your chainring off centre? What about chain tension? Is it too tight perhaps?

I’m thinking this is most likely. Give it a little bit of slack and see if the vibration goes away. That would point towards a tight spot on the chainring. Sheldon has all the answers on how to fix this.

Thanks guys…yea I think it cud be the chainring being off centre…coz it is only when my right pedal is between 10-1 o clock if ur looking straight at the crank

did this happen suddenly or have you built up a new bike and it is doing it?
i get a bit of vibration due to the chainline being out and my chain being a bit stuffed

Could also be a loose crank on the drive side. I had one thst wiggled a bit when you unweighted it (ie. switched from resisting the up stroke to pushing on the down stroke.

I was suffering an annoying creak that developed slowly on applying back pressure through the cranks.
Removed and cleaned/greased pedals, stripped BB and reinstalled, but it still persisted.
checked the chain ring bolts and wadda ya know…one was loose.
Coulda saved myself the time if I’d just checked em first.
Maybe drop the chain and loosen then redo the chainring nuts.make a mark on the down tube and spin em to see if there are any high/low spots.

This has been happening since i got the bike…i’ve been riding it a bit more nowadays and I hardly notice it but once in awhile it starts to happen again

Take the ring off and make sure it lays flat.
Also a possibility is borrow a ring from a buddy(?) and see if it fixes it.

There are too many variables to make a guess at what might be wrong, especially without pictures.

Take it to your LBS and let them have a look.

Thanks again guys!

Got it figured out…the chain tension was too tight, just needed to loosen it

you’re used to riding a bmx?
I had this issue when I started too.

yea I rode my BMX quite a lot as a kid…why do u ask?

bmx guys run tight chains, usually.

You know how to check whether the BB is worn? Grab the crank arm and try to move it back and forth laterally. If theres any movement thats probably the cause. Worn BBs often are the cause of creaks etc. The chain tension could be just part of it.
