Viner Columbus steel road bike

This is my do it all road bike used for training/commuting/general thrashing about.

56cm square Viner Columbus Cromor frame
Not the lightest frameset, but it’s very durable. I love the early 1990’s colour-way! I like Viner as they’re not as well known as the more famous Italian marques, and as such are very good value. Still made in Italy though…
Ultegra/Dura Ace 10 speed mix
Always been a Shimano dude… reliable what can I say
Fulcrum Racing 5’s
First time I’ve used Fulcrum’s- great value but geeze, the freewheel is so annoyingly loud!
Rolls Titanium saddle
My favourite. Got to lighten the bike up somehow!
Thomson Elite seatpost
The benchmark
Ritchey Pro stem
Cheap and cheerful
FSA roller-bearing threaded headset
So far so good. Used in conjunction with generic ahead adaptor.
Deda Newton shallow handlebars
The best IMO
Schwalbe Ultremo DD 25’s tyres
Great tyres- bit too nice for a training bike, but the ‘DD’ seems to make a difference (in terms of puncture resistance) compared to the regular Ultremo.
Ultegra SPD-SL pedals

I love it- it’s heavy but these sort of steel frames are bomb-proof. I feel as though you can ride through pretty much anything with this setup (wheelset pending!)

OMG, I just realised I don’t have a fixie anymore… :sunglasses:

I have them on my roadie at the moment and I have to agree - they are louder then my bell.

Great bike by the way

Nice. how long you had it?

I have been riding it for a couple of months now.
Doesn’t look so pretty these days thanks to the weather: :stuck_out_tongue:

But hey, I never wanted to get precious about this bike.

I lost an ebay auction with under 5 seconds to go on a red Viner which looks the same but in SLX, was so annoyed…

nice bike

and you don’t need to justify your reasons for riding shimano…

FYI Fulcrum wheels are made by Campagnolo to try and appeal to Shimano users.

From reports from mates that train and race on them they are very well made products, perfect for the kind of bike you have built.

ha, you got to be prepared on this forum… bloody Campag lovers…

Fuck Campagnolo.

If I could, I would

Yeah True, perhaps the coffee doesn’t taste as sweet when you ride to the cafe on shimano…

seeing this built up makes me pretty bummed i lost the bid on this guy

Hey nice frame!
I found that image when I searched for ‘Viner Columbus’ on Google a while ago.
I can thoroughly recommend them. Not the fanciest paint job or decals, but as an everyday bike it’s perfect. I’ve owned fancy ‘Sunday’ bikes in the past but I hated it since I wanted to ride them everyday.

I dig this bike! nice set up indeed. I love loud freewheels too… no need for a bell.

the pic of the red f&f looks like the forks are bent?

anyway, any reason you adapted to an ahead-stem?

Hey JP, thanks for the positive feedback! It’s a fun bike to ride.

In regards to the ahead adaptor, it’s actually better than expected.
I’m so over quill stems- especially the whole non-removable front-face thing (yes I know there are removable face quill stems, but they’re uncommon, and 31.8mm I don’t think so).
It’s got to be said that ahead stems are MUCH easier to use.

Okay, so here is my latest project- a deep section wheelset that doesn’t cost the world, but is light enough to have reasonable performance.
Haven’t ridden them yet- I’ll see how they go tomorrow.
And yes, the braking surface is obviously going to turn silver at some point…

Custom wheelset care of Shifterbikes:
-H Plus Son SL42 rims 24/28H
-Dura Ace 7900 hubs 24/28H
Wheelsmith bladed spokes
1840g complete weight (not bad for 42mm aluminium rim)

wheels look nice!
