That’s beautiful. I’ve put it on my watch list, but I gotta find a 1.23 metre space in my living room before I bid. Currently $102, I think it’ll go much higher.
not vintage, but one for the audiophiles…Neil Young’s successfully Kickstarted Pono
thoughts? more than a few positive reviews from industry in the vid.
i don’t claim to understand the science but i’m certainly intrigued…
i guess you could call this vintage
Rad I have a stereogram as my nightstand with a pro-ject TT on top.
I just picked up a Marantz CD-48 CD player for not very much. Hi-fi system now complete.
How much do you wanna spend? I got pro-ject crabon I don’t need, aint vintage though?
Not vintage, but my sister-in-law wants a turntable for Christmas. She doesn’t have an amp, and I’m pretty sure her stereo set up consists of a Bose iPhone dock thing.
It doesn’t have to be super duper top of the range, but not a $99 built-in-USB Dick Smith special either. Suggestions?
Just cleaned a space on my entertainment unit and looking to get a fairly decent record player.
Something that doesn’t require additional speakers/amps/whatever.
My parents gave me $200 for xmas I’ve just got so that’s pretty much my budget.
Are those $75 jobbies from Kmart/JB worth a look or can someone link to a good/affordable brand?
^ Assuming you have an amp already, does it have a phono stage?
The reason I ask is that for $200 you could pick up a pretty decent ‘vintage’ turntable, just hit up second hand stores, particularly hi-fi orientated ones. You could trawl Gumtree and Ebay, but it would be better if you can have a listen and get a warranty.
I have a Rega P1 in very good condition that I would let go for $200. I am in Adelaide.
Oh man, I would be all over that Rega if I had some money to throw around…
I have nothing at the moment, looking at a super basic setup (unit with speakers built in).
Again doesn’t have to be amazing, just something to play a few records on.
^ Ah, right. I think there’s some half decent all-in-one turntables out there, but I reckon you’ll struggle with your $200 budget. Not my area of expertise though, so I’ll hand over to the hi-fi nerds.
First: Does your current unit have any inputs available? 3.5mm socket / 2xRCA plugs?
If so, it’ll be line level input unless it specifically says ‘phono’, so any traditional TT with RIAA output will need an additional preamp to convert it, more money. This is where those cheapie TTs come in as they have line level output already.
Something like this has RIAA & line level outputs and is under budget:

If you have no inputs available, scour gumtree/ebay for an 80s amp that has a phono stage, should be able to get an amp and TT and speakers for under your budget if you are patient.
You could get a used TT of much higher quality than that one I linked for the same money, but you’re stuck with also getting a preamp / replacing your current system.
Sorry I may have mislead everyone. I have a flat surface with one power outlet. Nothing else, I got one from Kmart a while back but the thing was continually squeaking. Never thought to get another one again.
ohhh, so no allinone stereo. got it.
so you want an amp/receiver (receiver if you want radio too), a pair of speakers and a TT.
For $200 you pretty much have to go used. By the time you buy a cheap JB TT you don’t have much left over for amp/spk, let alone any records.

Unless you want something that’s going to be pretty horrible sounding like this
I’ve got it - get one of these:
Cheers guys, I saw an Iron Maiden vinyl box set on the weekend and pretty much decided I a reason to own that.
Hey guys - hoping that someone with some knowledge in this stuff would be able to help me out. My mum is wanting to sell her hifi set up. Would anyone be able to give me a ballpark price for what she should be asking for this stuff?
