Would like help on which disc brakes to get from people in the know.
Build is Voodoo wazoo frame, single speed 32h White Industries hubs to possibly stans arch 29 rims.
This is going to be my winter “rain day” work bike so looking for something that is going to be reliable and not need a lot of maintenance/bleeding etc… I want to be able to get through a 9 hour day and still have brakes at the end of it.
Any help is appreciated
Thanks
Shimano XT hydros or Avid BB7 cables - both are reasonably ‘set & forget’, with the cables needing a liitle bit more maintence (cable stretch, pad adjustment) but nothing major. I like goodrich lines for hydro discs (or equivalent) but that might not be necessary for non dirt riding.
+1 to the above. I’ve also got a set of SLX hydros they have been good.
I’ve got BB5s, and they’ll do everything that BB7 do, but set up is much more of a pain due to the lack of an outboard pad adjuster. To set that pad’s rest position, you need to adjust the cable length through either the clamp on the brake, or the fine tune adjuster knobs on the cable.
BB7s. Look no further.
Dead easy setup and very little maintenance required. Get decent cable housings.
Sorry, should have said that i would rather hydros… the 2012 XT’s look good but what rotors should i use? … seems they only come in centerlock this year and i need 6 bolt …would there be problems using a third party rotor or is it best to use a older model xt setup that offers 6 bolt?
Thanks for the answers so far
XT;s are great, if you look around a few shops might still have them at $299 for the pair with all hardware.
No issues at all with using a different rotor.
The new XT “Icetech” rotors are available in 6 bolt and CL. You can also use a standard RT-74 rotor in 6 bolt, they’re the same shape, just without the aluminium core in the rotor. I’m using Avid g3s with mine on the grounds that they were on my rotor hanging nail when I installed the brakes, and the Icetechs weren’t. They still work the hotness.
