Looking at the Hottest100 is the best indicator of what JJJ has become. As Papa Spirito says ‘things dun change’… I was glad to see FBI re-emerge as its first incarnation was pretty good.
I used to really like RSR and spent many hours trying to get my suburban bedroom stereo to pick it up. The punk show they used to run scored me more than a few tickets to shows i shouldnt have been allowed into.
Having said that Joy Division (while a great band) winning for the first umpteenth years was rubbish too.
another thing that kind of died was an effort to consider the collective output of particular record labels. I know I learned a hell of a lot about jazz, dnb, dub and so on by exploring bluenote, capitol, columbia, moving shadow, metalheadz, hospital, !k7, leaf etc. elefant traks gets a bit of focus to some extent (the herd, hermitude, …) but that might be a way for jjj (or any station) to address the context and evolution of their current rotation – explaining where things came from, what’s similar (but slightly different), and where the music is heading.
I didn’t get much into punk / hardcore / metal when I was buying several hundreds of dollars of CDs a month, but I imagine there’s similar labels.
I think some of the older audience (mid-20s onwards) might appreciate the current music more if it they could relate to it in terms of what we were listening to back in the day… and maybe if the current / future artists were better aware of australia’s musical history, they might avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls.
