He said before he started that he’s there to support Sammy Sanchez so I’m not surprised. Cadel doesn’t do anything by half. When he rides in support he makes sure that he does lose huge chunks so that he’s never considered a GC threat. He did this in the TDF in 2013, once he was out of the picture for GC he deliberately lost huge minutes with a plan to get in a breakaway and take a stage, that didn’t work out but that was the plan anyway.
He seems to be finished as a climber but I think his performance in the ITT (in this Vuelta) and his two stage wins in that Utah tour indicate that he might have some life left as a stage winner and a spring classics contender.
