Best road wheels under $1000

I’d like some recommendations for the best road wheelset under $1000. I’m not after a flash custom build, but a factory built set.

I’ve heard good things about Easton wheels, perhaps the EA90SLX or (EA90SL better for bigger rider) are worth a try?

Edit: the EA90SLs are going for $600 (incl. postage) on eBay.

While I’m at it, SRAM Red vs. Campy Chorus. Who wins?

Yeah the Easton wheels have been getting a good rep lately. Having said that the quality of their hubs is often argued out.
Personally, I reckon the Dura Ace 7850 CL wheelset is pretty amazing- very highly regarded wheelset and sub 1450grams. About $850.00 online.
Other good wheelsets would be Fulcrum racing 3’s, Campagnolo Zonda or Eurus (Shimano freehub option). Even the Neutron Ultra is pretty cool.
Oh and lots of talk about American Classic as well.
Mavic wheelsets are very overrated and I’ve read lots about their quality control dropping in the last couple of years (cracking Ceramic on CD Open Pros, R-SYS fiasco etc)

Chorus 11s vs SRAM Red?
SRAM Red is pretty cheap for the performance. I think it’s getting an upgrade this year isn’t it?

Why not? I ask only because I think for $1000 you could get a very nice wheelset built.

I bought a set of velocity helios last year for my roadie and was pretty impressed with the weight and construction.

I know of someone who has some Shamal clinchers for sale for $900 (not me I’m keeping mine)

Thanks Horatio - I’ll check those out

Because they aren’t for me - for a bike I’m building.

need to be more specific what the bike is being used for

Road ‘training’ for a bigger rider ~ 85kgs.

Holy Christ Sram Red shits on Record let alone Chorus!

Been riding Sram Red for some time now and it is totally flawless. Hoorah!

Thanks, I’ll take that on board. And SRAM red vs Shimano Ultegra/DA?

Horatio - are these what you are talking about?

Sram Red before all else! I hope i’m not being dogmatic…but it is great. Such a great shift, best braking, just a great package.

A little thread hijack, how much are vento’s going for currently?

You’re starting off by ruling out the best option, imo

Give Peter Bundy a call, and ask him what wheels he can build for that price. Id opt for Aeroheads laced with DB spokes to a 32/36 hole hubset for a rider over 85kg’s. For a lighter rider 28 front, 32 rear is fine. Enough money for tyres, tubes and a casette if you opt for something like Ultegra hubs and some coin left over. Barring an accident those wheels will last a long while, good good service and be ultra practical.

What can I say, I like factory wheels. My shimano wheels are 16 and 24 I think, and I abuse the shit our of them and they are dead straight 3 years in.

I’ll be in at Pete’s on Satd’y morn’ anyway so I’ll ask him then.
Been to see Jim lately? I’ve been keeping him busy. Can you tell him to take the frame to the painter - he said it would be there on Monday!!

I never got to the bottom of that other thing either - he seems to be an illusive character, but I’ll hunt around again on Sunday arvo.

I tend to agree with Spirito, but each to their own of course. FWIW, I have a set of at least ~8 year old Mavic Cosmic Carbones that get regular off road abuse. They’re 16/24 with a half radial rear and they’ve never needed truing and still run straight and smooth. But when it comes to wheels I’m really a traditionalist at heart

Good for you Re: low spoke factory wheels. I had a set of Shamal road wheels and loved them, but for regular road riding I tend to play it safe. I’ve seen too many riders abandon a ride because their low spokers had some kinda issue.

Anyway, with wheels the old adage applies: Cheap, Strong, Light … choose any two !!!

Pete loves building wheels. Give him a few days to get whatever parts are needed in but he’ll always come up with something perfectly suited and way less $'s than many people might think.

I did see a Keirin frame at Jim’s with a massive busted downtube a few weeks ago. Sweet frame. Didn’t see anything your size.

Regarding the latter, don’t worry about it. I’ve moved on

oldSKOOL!!

Yes!
Google some reviews and you’ll see they have a very good wrap from people.
Very light, strong, no rider weight limit I think, and the best part is the schweet Dura Ace hubs which pretty much shits on everything else…
Oh and tubeless/clincher option what more could you ask for?
Having said that, I haven’t ridden them, but I think they are my next wheelset.
I think there is a 2010 version that is out (the ones you link to) and they look a bit different to last years model.
