Brisbane to Gold Coast Ride

Fark off! your definition of casual ride is 40k/h +

you’d know… dirty fuck

probably casual. i’m too lazy to swap from risers and platform pedals.

casual i think, we could always inject some pace down the line somewhere

Ey, I’m born casual…
I’m meeting up with the king of the GC at a bit after 6 at the shop.

Hopefully this storm will clear up and leave a nice day behind it.

i heard that kind guy is a jerk, should be a good ride. im down for a casual pace

i just had some steak contador style hopefully that will keep me going

just did a quick blast out to port of brisbane and back, that ought to be enough training. left over spag for dinner, on top of potatoes on top of rice all cooked in gatorade, no gross.

got to pick up my bib in the morning, forgot on friday, gonna get there about 5:20, so should be enough time

How was the ride lads?

Who were the two guys I met in full GearBrisbane kit?
I went back to say hi to them again and to introduce myself formally and they were gone…

I was riding south and met up wit a group of bike riders doing some charity ride to Southport??? Luckily it was just before a very aggressive magpie at Eagleby.
It was a blast- very very well mannered group of head bangers (you actually have 10 gears on the back there folks, aside from those two little sprockets) Was just going to go straight on but ended up riding around Jacobs Well.
Police car in front all the way- taken through every red light- then just turning into hop island road- my chain jumped and got stuck on the fucking pin that is meant to stop it getting stuck on!!! changing the ring and extending or removing the aforementioned fucking pin.
So I then rode to Helensvale to see a club race and get a coffee, then home. Still a lot of poor sods still riding down- at 10 30 am way before the last stop- Sold one couple an inner tube a Stapylton- didn’t have the heart to tell them how far way they were.
Then the free sausage sizzle and drinks at Eaglby on the way home- wonderful- and the magpie must have been rooted after attacking 10 000 cyclists…cos he didn’t get me.
I was the old fat guy on the blue cycle cross bike- which I hasten to add was essential at the first stop!

I may even enter again if i can be assure of such a good safe group next year- a met reported there were fisticuffs in a group she was in- got to get that story.

I rode down on my NEW black Soma fixed from Gear (50/16) and my brother rode his white Soma fixed w green H/bar tape (48/16). Last year I blew up bigtime (48/17) and took 3h20m for an average of 30kph. This year we were much more conservative early so I felt pretty good towards the end and managed 2h50m for a 35.3kph average. Got away from the line at Southbank at 05:25 and rolled into the finish at 08:15 despite some very long red lights on the GC.
I found the other riders less dangerous this year, the winds weren’t bad at all so was sitting 38-42 most of the time. 50/16 seemed a good choice and my brother wishes he had the same. It was a blast heading into and through Hope Is where it appears to be uphill for 5-10km but I was solo, rolling at 38-43, cruising through a couple of bunches. My brother pulled in about 1 minute after me, having picked up a nice quick bunch and getting a better run through the lights.
Saw approx 3 singlespeeds but we didn’t see any other fixies at all.
From my POV, it was a much more enjoyable event this year, mine and my bro’s bikes worked perfectly and seemed very suitable weapons-of-choice for a 100km sporty roll.
A few riders were amazed we were riding fixed and didn’t get it at all, thought we were crazy. I dunno: seemed fine to me!
P.S. My brother broke his collarbone a coupla months ago riding fixed home from work in the dark - hit a pothole on Kadumba St so was probably still 2 weeks or more away from his ideal ride.
P.P.S. What is it with the patch of muddy grass we had to negotiate at the first “stop”? - we didn’t stop at either, carried enough food and water with us.

great day, Jack, if you’re on here sorry we lost you, had to stop for a mechanical and we thought we’d find you at the rest stop, but it wasn’t to be, hope you made it down alright! i’ll post up some pics soon

Couldn’t have asked for a better morning, we set off at about 6.10 to a distinct lack of fanfare. Held back the laughter for the poor sods with punctures within the first 200m of the days ride for fear of being smat by the gods, but surely all the puncture worthy objects had been spiked by the early starters. Cruising down the Logan busway was supreme, smooth and plenty of room, we were soon well on our way.

Heard a bit of a noise from Bennett’s bike and we pulled into a servo to check it “I think my crank is coming loose” says Bennett, sorry champ try your seat tube. Shitty end to his day, only about 20km in. It was here that we realised young Jack was ahead of the group and didn’t know we’d stopped. Hope you made it down/back ok tiger!

Rest of the ride was pretty smooth, I really enjoyed the slight detours out into the cane fields, getting on the wheel of many a Cranky Old Bastard, Rupert was tailing one particular guy with bmx bars and he was on a mission

Rest stops had bananas! initially i was excited because i havn’t had one for months, then got jaded as we figured out their stockpiling could have been partially to blame for price spikes!!

Train ride back was a bit of a shitfight, there’s only so many bikes you can get on one train, and apparently translink was a sponsor, maybe they could have put on a couple of extra services?

Other than that it was a pretty smooth day and for me, first time i’ve cracked a 100km ride. Thanks to Tom, Eric, Jack, Drew, Rupert, Jill for making it a fun ride.

this would be the most flattering angle, trust me

these two blokes on this forum somewhere aye? beardo and sleeve tatts, surely

my favourite bike spotted on the day, besides the dunlop dualies/scooters/tandem with tandem kiddie trailer thing

I ride track with the Beardo, cool guy, pretty sure he isn’t on here though.

Yeah, great ride guys, perfect conditions, thanks!
I saw Jack after the finish, he was too fast for us…
