Victorian Transport Association’s chief executive Peter Anderson also called for tighter training and licensing requirements for heavy vehicle drivers in Victoria, where truck driver licences are granted on the basis of five hours’ on-site training and the ability to reverse a vehicle 50 metres in a straight line.
Unless they have changed the licensing system recently there is a bit more to obtaining a licence than that. I had to do a driving test for one hour on all sorts of roads, including some specific maneuvers like parking, also an offset reverse into a tight space - not just a straight line.
I agree there could be more done in the training to protect vulnerable road users though. Things like taking wider lines around corners to make more space between the truck and heavily pedestrianed areas. Overtaking bicycles safely by not cutting back in too soon and leaving plenty of space would be another good point to highlight. The industry also has structural issues, fatigue is probably the number one problem which stems from the culture of the transport companies and financial pressures on individual owner-drivers.
So I lost one of my black Volleys on my ride into work today. They were strapped onto the top of my backpack on my front rack and when I got to work there was only one.
If you see it please let me know I ride from near Westgarth Station, along Westgarth St, then High St, Queens Pde, Alexandra Pde past the pool, then down Brunswick St, Victoria St, Spring St and finally Lonsdale.
Fellow bicycle commuter got cut off by a Porsche SUV in front of me on William this morning. I snuck around the outside, but did hear said cyclist giving the driver an ear full. As I slowed to a stop at the next red light, old mate blasted through the red without so much as a glance at any oncoming traffic! Guess he was high on adrenaline or didn’t want to hang around for any retaliation from Mr Porsche. #coolstorybro
went for a run in it. great way to keep somewhat cooler in that heat…
was amazing and the greasy sections of one part of the bike path made for some skills training in my non-trail shoes
