Cycling shoes- MTB

That’ll be a good look with the running shorts! :stuck_out_tongue:

mavics go out of shape if you put them in the wash, thats why ill go sidi when i get some mtb shoes again

I’m getting Sidis once my (coughs) Nikes wear out… They’ve been great tho’. And would definately be getting a pair that have a ratchet strap and are stiff and light.

Louis Garneau… next pair of shoes I buy.

Why do people keep buying dominators? They are expensive for what they are (plastic sole, not the best traction).

Anyone got word on the Giro’s?

I have LGs now and so far they are great - daily commuting + 6 x decent mtb rides in the past 3 months or so - in the worst type of weather. Downside is the velcro straps are overly long. The Sidis i had previously were amazing but too expensive to replace, prior ro that only use shimanos with no real complaints.

Another vote for Specialized. I’ve got a Pro and a Comp shoe. My Pro seems to be narrower for some reason, but I’ve got wide feet. I prefer the buckle instead of the velcro top strap purely because I think the velcro will wear out quicker.

+1 You bring up a good point. The problem with Sidi is their midrange and below are honestly bad value, and not that great.

Having said that, once you go above a certain price point they make fantastic shoes- I’ve got Sidi Eagle 6 MTB and they are great quality. On the other hand I’ve got the Genius 5 Pro’s which are considered their ‘cheaper’ road shoe and the sole is pretty crap and cheap.

But they are a great fit!

why? because they fit my feet very well… and for the longest time they had the most minimal looking graphics (thats why everyone has them in black). plus that peer pressure thing.

their quality has dropped off over the past 5ish years and three pairs ive had. id guess this is because the dominators have now been moved down in the range. they used to be close to the eagles, but now there are the dragons and some other incarnations.

whats wrong with plastic soles? if you are using them regularly on/off the bike you will find some issues with carbon soles. like how easily it can crack or get damaged from mid-sole impacts/contortions. the kind of stuff that doesnt normally happen while on a MTB, but will happen as you wander teenage parties cutting the rug and impressing the ladies with your fakkenger styles.

they arent expensive if you are buying outside of australia… we get abnormally shafted by the local pricing of sidis, but i note that MSRP has improved lately.

but back to your question… giros were ridden to the US elite and U23 mens Cx championships this year. i have also heard some pretty good stories about them from other owners.

shimanos have a great rep and if they fit you the higher end ones seem pretty good. specialized get consistently good reviews.

find the ones that fit/feel best… then worry about technology. for me ratchets > velcro, but id be down to try BOA as it seems to have improved massively from its first few iterations.

im looking at trying some northwaves next for a change (i need a wider shoe so mavics and shimanos are out)

I’ll never bust dance moves in road shoes after a certain slippery knog party. Now the new Giro Privateers look like a good alternative to dominators (aesthetically). I wasn’t talking shit on plastic soles more that for dominators at 170-200 online are in the same price bracket as Mavic furys (if you hunt around). I am worried about durability…
cheers for the info

My Dominators have lasted ages… and they have spent way more time in pubs than on bikes.

There are always bargains to be had from guys that buy the wrong size online.I scored both pairs of my SIDI’s 2nd hand.

Don’t overlook bargains at local shops that get rid of old or superseded stock as well.

SIDIs 'cause they fit my narrow-ass feet nicely.

this - last three pairs of shoes I’ve scored in store, all around the 50% off retail mark (and still cheaper than Wiggle, CRC, etc) when the stores have changed shoe brands/suppliers and just need to clear the old stuff off the floor for whatever new crap they’re going to stock

Shimano m183’s. I’ve been trying for the last 2.5 years to kill them and I just can’t.

Saw some super cheap Sidi Eagle 5s at My Mountain for peoples with massive feet.

Sidi’s are wicked if they fit your feet and you can get huge spikes for them for running up muddy banks.

I’m currently riding some Bont Riots for pretty much everything. They’re great on gravel and XC style riding. But I’ve been doing some more enduro / gravity trail riding and I’m finding them too stiff and uncomfortable – spent a weekend up at Falls/Bright and my feet hurt.

So I’m thinking a second pair of something like Shimano ME5 or ME7, for a bit more comfort and durability, and reduced stiffness on steep trail riding. I’m not going flats, and I’ll be keeping the Bonts for gravel. Thoughts?

I use Bont Riots MTB for road/gravel bike as well. Got wide fitting, because I’ve got wide forefoot, and appreciated the heat mold thing which seemed to help with one tight spot.

For MTB I run flats, and have been very happy with Shimano GR700. Wide enough and comfy, and sole has lasted well. Would probably look at the GR500 next time as they are a tiny bit cheaper, and otherwise seem really similar.
