East Coast camping suggestions....

Hello folks.

Seems FOA has an abundance of outdoor types, so thought i’d ask for tips on where to camp/see between Mallacoota and Sydney.

I will be driving (with a bike in the back, but not for anything serious, knee isn’t up to it yet.)

I’m leaving on Sunday and aim to be in Sydney for the long weekend. OH HAAAIIIIII SYDNEY PEEEPS.

I’m sorted until the 21st, so have about 4 days to get there, thinking 2-3 stops along the way.

Preferences:

  • State parks rather than National (less regulated, free, first come - best dressed, usually quieter).
  • Staying relatively close to the coast, happy to take the smaller roads rather than the big highways.
  • No caravan parks or major tourist towns.
  • Nearby to 4wd tracks (this is obviously secondary and there’s other forums i can research this bit more thoroughly, so no stress if your suggestions aren’t anywhere near any).

After Sydney I’ll be going to the Blue Mountains and CBR (OH HAAAIIIIII CANBERRA PEEEPS!), so maybe some Blue Mountains spots would be great too!.

If, y’know, anyone had a holiday home somewhere along the coast they weren’t currently using and, maybe, kinda, wanted to let me stay there, that’d be ok too…

GOOOOOO!

There are a couple of 4WD only* free campsites in the blue mtns that are great:
Murphys Glen campground | NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

Burralow Creek camping area, Blue Mountains National Park - Explore Australia

*they’re really only 4WD only in the wet - I would say more like 4WD recommended.

We normally camp at Coledale about an 1 1/2 south of Sydney as it is right on the beach, but it is pretty popular and you have to pay.

It’s doesn’t meet many of your requirements but if you haven’t been to the Budawangs I’d recommend it. It’s a pretty intense place to do overnight hiking in so you might want to stick to the drive-in campsites and do an ascent of Pigeon House for this sort of view:

sweet as, thanks mate!

seems the Murphys Glen site is currently closed due to excess water, so hopefully it dries out over the next two weeks.

how long is the hike to that view?

my knee really is a bit of a limiting factor (still recovering from a knee recon in late august). i can walk to a certain degree, but if it’s straight up/down i’m kinda screwed… :frowning:

Yeah I know your knee’s not great :frowning:

It’s not a long walk but it’s pretty much straight up a hill (500m ascent total): Pigeon House Mountain - Bushwalking NSW

If you’re heading from Blue Mtn to Canberra - there is a great 2 or 3 day 4wd trip you can do from the turn off to the Jenolan caves, then past Jenolan to the Wombeyan caves, then on to Goulburn which is not far from Canberra. It is mainly dirt, a couple of river/creek crossing and a few steep ups and downs with campsites along the way. Nothing super tech

Alright. I will start of the places that I enjoy… let’s start with

BERMAGUI - used to be a small fishing village, and featured in the Billy Connoly movie 'The Man Who Sued God", but it has started becoming a bit of a popular holiday area. Don’t discount it though because it has some really good qualities. The pub here is special to me, my grandpa spent his last moments on earth drinking a beer and having a punt. It’s tradition to me to have a bet when I am here (only time I bet and have to be shown how to do it every single time). If you stop here, have a beer for William for me. Bermagui also has a kick ass Gelati joint, all stuff is made locally and the choice depends on what is available at the time. Next door you have a typical ‘hipster’ cafe, this is run by a very talented artist - the only art hanging in my place is from him. https://misterjonesespresso.carbonmade.com

You could probably camp along some 4WD tracks at Gulaga National Park/Bermagui State Forest just close to Wallaga Lake

TILBA
Small, quaint country town. Touristy - but it is in such a beautiful spot. As seen on ‘Little River Cottage - Australia’. Drive past the town and just look at all of those rolling green hills. Park your car, make a coffee and just be.

MORUYA AREA
Some really good beaches around these parts - look for Bingie Point (Bingie Road) and Congo.

From here, you can take a coast road from Moruya to Batemans Bay or go straight through to Batemans Bay via the Princes Highway. Depending on traffic, I would go Moruya to Tomakin - thats a nice short drive. If it isn’t too busy, keep going through to Batemans Bay… and keep driving. Batemans Bay is no good. It’s Canberra coast people.

SOUTH DURRAS
This is possibly my favourite part of the south coast. A good place to camp would be here as they are 4WD tracks to get there.
North Head campground | NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

NORTH DURRAS
Drive down here for a breakfast/lunch spot and hang out at Depot Beach. Hang here for a bit before going up north to Pebbly beach (campsites here as well, but they will probably be all used). Get out of the car and take a small walk over the hill to North Pebbly Beach. This is a super eerie beach full of rocks instead of sand - so when the waves crash over the beach it creates this awesome stone grinding noise. Good surf spot too when the swell works.

The bad thing about both north and south Durass is that you have to drive back to the highway each time to head north. About a 10 minute drive each way. No biggy.

ULLADULLA
A big town, skip it unless you are after some fish and chips… in which case head into Tigers Fish and Chips on 22 Wason Street. I don’t even eat fish but I eat fish from here.

MOLLYMOOK/ NARRAWALLEE
My brother got married here, beautiful part of the world. No need to stay, just a drive by will get a feel for the place.

MILTON
One of my favourite eating joints down the coast is here. Pilgrims. All vegetarian stuff but you have to get yourself a feed here. I recommend the Harvest with a Golfie. Home

JERVIS BAY
Famous for it’s white sand - head to Hyams beach to check it out. On a sunny day the water is super blue. You might be able to get a camp spot at Cave Beach Camping Ground. It is in a national park… so fees will apply.

BERRY
Inland coastal town. Pass by if you need to - word on the street is they have a donut van called ‘The Famous Berry Donut Van’. Probably a good spot to stock up.

GERRINGONG / WERRI BEACH
Good surf towns. Sit and watch the locals rip it up.

KIAMA
There is a blowhole here - follow the tourists… WHOOOOOOSH.

SEA CLIFF BRIDGE
I have never driven along it, but it features heavily in car adverts on TV. You want to get onto Lawrence Hargrave Dr to get on to it - it snakes along the beach so good viewing will be had. Google tells me this will eventually turn into Lady Wakerhurst Dr and then Sir Bertram Stevens Dr which will snake you through to Sydney.

SYDNEY TOLLS
Don’t forget to resister for this.

… and blue mountains stuff here.

Middle Beach campground | NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service

Middle Beach, near Tathra/Bega, is a favourite of mine.

Next to the beach for bathing duties, great fishing/diving too. Watch out for the lizards finding your food.

OMG LIZARDS!!!

Thread should be renamed to SouthEast Coast camping suggestions…

when is ROLLYROLLYROLLY coming North again?

Ahhh yes. Goannas. Everywhere down there.

Araganu beach campsite is nice and has a beautiful sheltered beach (in the mimosa rocks area)

I’ve just done this trip.

Tilba is worth a stop on the weekend for a visit. I really enjoyed Tathra, it’s kinda sleepy and non touristy. There is also some sneaky trails around there I found out after the fact.

I really didn’t rate batemans/bermagui/merimbula/eden felt dirty and grubby and after the tourist dollar.

Gillards beach campground is great. Had kangaroo’s for company here.

Mystery bay is kinda dirty but cool and sleepy.

I Loved saltwater creek campground (slightly sentimental cause thats we I proposed) Also beaches to yourself.

Pebbly beach is a must visit… Sitting on the beach at night watching dolphins play in the waves. Magical. More beaches to yourself, huge amounts of indigenous heritage thats worth finding out about before you go. lots of good walks.

Buy a parks pass - $50? much cheaper than a day pass if your stopping for more than a few days. All those campground had rangers asking for $$ about $10/night. all sold firewood $5/night. and most had BBQ or fire cooking facility’s.

Wow, I had no idea the Budawangs are that amazing. So close to Canberra. I’ll definitely check it out this year

Berry’s rad. The donut van is overhyped. There’s two pubs. The older sandstone one in the main row of shops is the betterer.

I don’t think donut van is overhyped. Donut van is fucking rad.

It’s fresh donuts… you get donuts, you eat them. 5 minutes done.
