Fixed + knee injuries

Haha yeah they totally work.
I just use them to stick my Physio exercises on the fridge.
So I guess they do work.

Oh shit man :frowning:

where is this coming from, you guess? i didn’t quote that shit for nothing / / / /

I know. Wind direction is forecast as NE @20 km/h for the ride. If this stays true big gears would be a bad choice for everyone I think. There’s no hiding from the wind on the freeway unless you’re at the back of the bunch and it’s inevitable that at some point you will have to cut the wind.

I found a TA 44 toof front and an elcheapola 16 rear - gives me about 72gi and 32km/h at 93rpm. I have 46 front if the wind is a southerly on the day. I like a spinny gear anyway and will err on the side of a little too low than a little too high.

My knee is a little better this morning and got the train in for a full rest day, will go for a test ride on saturday to check it out.

Yeah, im not liking this NE prediction. full on head wind the WHOLE WAY. ballsack.

I’ll stick with 80. cbf changing really.

Plus i put keo’s on today and my pedal stroke got so much better, not the slightest inkling or tweak of the knees at all.

I probs could have run my 46 front ring but hey, reckon I did alright considering. Didn’t get any knee pain which is the main thing. I’m gonna stay on 72gi for a month or 2, then maybe up it to 75 or 76 to build my strength up slowly.

strangley enough, i would get knee pain with my SPD’s but now i’m on Keo’s no pain! that is probably a cleat adjustment thing though!!! I reckon you did bloody well personally!

diiiiiiiiiiiiiiig

the last few days have been the first time I’ve felt I’m kind of in favour of getting a knee recon.

riding in Melb means it doesn’t give me daily pain, but I’ve really felt limited/anxious hiking in the US & it’s annoying. I’ve started thinking that with a recon this stuff may actually be something I can do with much more ease & even, dare I say it, confidence, something I’ve not had in about a decade (almost exactly I realised today, I tore my ACL in Easter 04).

thoughts from those that have had recons? were you able to hike etc much like normal?

keen to hear people’s experiences…

I had a recon six months ago. it got to the point where I couldnt even ride. Needless to say I recommend getting it fixed.

My surgery included chondroplasty, sinovectomy and lateral release of the knee cap.

I road single speed for six months and just switched to fixed, so far so good. BUT, not skids yet so that may be helping.

I think you should be alright hiking, but if you are like me, give yourself three or four months to recover.

yeah that sounds pretty bad, I have very few issues riding as the muscles around it are strong enough (now) to compensate.

I think it’s more that for the first time I’ve really felt limited by my knee & enthusiastic about the potential of having a knee capable of more things.

just interested to hear about how long ppl took to recover & any noticeable improvement in terms of activities they’re now able to do again etc.

gypo, didn’t you have a recon or somethin a while ago??

cheers.

i’m going in for an arthroscope next week, obviously not a full reco but about 3 years of swelling and limited movement and general pain…figured it was time.
insurance covers it pretty much too which is awesome.

i’m pretty excited for it actually, mostly for the rehab/gym work after that will hopefully lead to a more balanced strength through the legs.
will be nice to walk down stairs with a bit of confidence.

yeah that’s kinda where I’m at all of a sudden, enthusiastic about the possibilities of perhaps having a hugely improved knee. I shared a campsite with a guy in Zion that had had an ACL recon & he was smashing hikes with little difficulty, made me see the positive side to having it done rather than playing the preventative game (which is fine if you’re not hindered by it too much). I also hiked with a paediatric surgeon yesterday & she said the amount of swelling on my knee after our 8 mile hike was definitely not normal!

I have hospital cover etc with MBP but may even go public as it is usually fine in Melb.

All the best …I hope it goes well , eat that fish too …all good for the joints

^cheers dude. ate plenty of fish once upon a time (old man is a fish monger)

oh yeah, I seemed to forget that bit in my ramblings, I meant to wish you luck!! hope it goes well, keep us posted on how it goes!

thanks mate. you had one yeah? what sorta recovery time did you have? also, remind me again why you went for the bungee option rather than the hamstring?

Yeah I had one. Got the bungy cord (LARS ligament) because of the short recovery time, 4 weeks and that fact I’m NOT a footballer! I was back racing my motorbike in the 4th week after surgery. This did require some pretty intense physion sessions three times a week but for me it was totally worth it.
LARS option was only available to me because I got to the doc within 4-6 weeks of the injury as there’s still some of my actual ACL in there.
One would assume yours is completely gone and they would need to take one from your hamstring which in turn, is what increases the recovery time because you effectively remove the hamstring ligament from your body and it dies, basically then it has to regenerate itself again in your knee. So you’re now recovering from two surgeries.

ahhhhh that’s right, I remember the catch with the bungy option now, definitely not an option for me!!

bugger.

maybe I could get a donated one from a cadaver…

Rolly,

Long time lurker but i had a ACL replacement done on my left knee just over 3 years ago. It was a hamstring donation and recovery time was long but thorough. It was 2 months before i was riding fixed again - not an issue. It was 7 months before i could run again and then another 6 months before i started playing soccer again. If you take the physio and rehab serious then you will find that you recover well but the knee will never feel normal. The biggest issue i’ve had is the bloody hamstring. For the second 12 months post op i kept causing tears in the hammy owing to the scar tissue and even now i need to constantly stretch it because it is so tight. i’m really glad i got it done and if your leg muscles are strong then you will reap the benefits of the operation.

Good luck.

Hose

thanks hose, that’s good stuff & kinda what I was after! that’s a decent span of time, but I don’t run or play sports so only 2 months or so before being able to ride again sounds pretty manageable.

I think I’d be pretty dedicated to the rehab as I’ve been told how important it is from my bro (he’s had 3!!) & think I’m in a better place in terms of my health than when I was 21!!

thanks again
