Foa overnighter!! - cancelled!!! :(

if i didn’t have to be in melbourne this weekend, I would be all over this.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

People are happy to tag all their commutes and short road rides with #outsideisfree but then won’t actually go camping (glamping really in this case!)

Buy a ticket, commit, don’t leave Rolly hanging you jerks or he’ll end up with the biggest whisky & sausage hangover.

Yeah,

C’mon, get on board! - otherwise if won’t encourage future fun time like this.

Its a great ride, great weather, you can take some beers etc, have a nice breakfast - fry up on the BBQ?!

Someone has done all the hard work for you!

I am going to lay it bare.

Have you ever met Roland? Of course you have. He is probably the funniest man ever. Significantly funnier than me. Which smarts but, you know, at least it’s going to someone worthy.

This trip allows you to spend time with Roland. One on one time. This is the guy who is ruler of all he purveys when he turns on the fixie forum every morning, precisely at 5am.

You can get into his ear about all kinds of interesting things.

Never mind the weather (which will be excellent), or the countryside (which will be beautiful). Think of it as a trip away with Rolly.

I heard Rolly is going to trip on the cable on Friday, so what else are you going to do on the weekend?

ok folks, this is officially cancelled due to lack of numbers.

rather than bitch & moan about it (I did that yesterday) I’d like to hear if people have any constructive criticism as to why they weren’t interested or willing to attend.

was it just a weekend you weren’t available?
don’t own camping gear?
too hard?
too cold?
don’t wanna risk a weekend away with people you may not know?
didn’t think it was worth $50?

if you’d rather not post here, please email me - rolly@fixed.org.au - to discuss.

I think this event would’ve been fucking awesome & am scratching my head a little as to why it flopped, so I want to know why as I’ve not given up on this idea for another time.

please discuss, but keep it constructive, I can’t be arsed sifting through bullshit posts about anything off topic.

cheers

R

My two cents, which I’ve already discussed with Roland:

Diffusion of responsibility. Everyone figures everyone else will sign up. Unsure how to fix this other than killing the internet or sparking a gargantuan change in herd psychology.

Keen to hear responses too.

I dunno man. I’d like to think I would’ve come along if I was in melbs, but in reality I don’t like being away from my wife and kid unnecessarily. That said, I would’ve done my best to get along. I’ve only done one overnight cycling/camping thing and it was super fun.

So I guess I’ve got nothing constructive. Maybe people just don’t like camping?

For me… pre-booked kids birthday party, so no way out. Or I would have been there.

My 2c opinion… “don’t wanna risk a weekend away with people you may not know?”

I’ve been a little uncertain about how best to approach this, keep ppl totally up to date with tickets available or keep it as an unknown.

with the movie night I heard some ppl went to book, saw there were still 20 left or whatever, then left it until later to buy them, even though they knew they were going to go. this makes the whole thing pretty precarious as that event was close to being cancelled too.

leaving the numbers unknown doesn’t seem to work either.

is it just that people don’t want to commit, because that makes it pretty damn difficult to organise things and keep investing REAL MONEY into an event based purely on people saying they’ll go?!

Kickstarter it?

This weekend has Tour of the South West, Anzac Day loooong weekend, DDCX skills session etc. lots of things already on, plus the days are short and the weather is getting colder.

Sticker shock? Perhaps more details in what your money buys you instead of just bag portaging & a campsite & some sausages?

Lack of equipment?

I was really excited to see this event but have my housemate/close friend’s birthday party at our place this Saturday.
Was seriously contemplating going, in fact I just did an overnight unsupported camping trip last weekend when the weather was perfect!

“don’t wanna risk a weekend away with people you may not know?” - personally, I would’ve gone for this.

Sorry to hear this.
I only became aware of this event on Monday after getting back from overseas.
Since I fall into the no camping gear category this did push going into the too hard category (parents have gear but I’d have been running around trying to get that and get a bike sorted and square it with Mrs FROG).

I do have a positive offering if you decide to offer this kind of event in future though:
As I’m married and Mrs FROG does not ride this could be the perfect way for us to try (bike) camping together. The added bonus is that Mrs FROG is a qualified chef with a campsite BBQ fetish (and a propensity for overcatering) so decent food should be possible :stuck_out_tongue:

This.

Also agree that being a ‘long’ weekend, most people have other plans. If it was a regular weekend I reckon there would be more interest. Even I will come!

Personally, I already had commitments that day so couldn’t make it, but I like the idea, and even though I would generally carry my own stuff I’d have likely jumped in anyway to support the event, fuck, it’s only $50, that’s like two fancy drinks at a swank bar with Chux.

I was actually thinking of suggesting this to the gf, but she had work all weekend. Flogging it as soemthing good for couples/friends too would lessen the DONT KNOW ANYONE IRL fear.

Camping is a personal thing, too many numbers and you loose the camp vibe™

the short lead time between being notified of the event and the actual date of said event.
as well as being a two day event, rather than just an arvo or morning and lunch taken up.

A touch over two weeks just wasn’t enough notice for me, I’m so busy at the moment I’m not really even getting any riding in, so this had to be missed.

Sorry to hear Rolly. Personally, it was a matter of having to try and get time off work, sort out camping gear plus I already had a few things planned for the weekend. All that combined with my excessive laziness had me also putting it in the ‘two hard basket’.

I quite like the idea and would be keen if you decided to put on another one. I agree with Tate that a little more time between announcing the event and the actual date may help a bit. Hoping you’ll be planning another for the future mate.
