Frame repairs and paint in Melbourne

So my Masi 3V frame arrived in a friends luggage from the states last week. Its got a few little dings and the paint is chipped up in places but nothing life threatening.

I hadn’t planned on restoring it but the wife tells me “you should get those dings fixed and paint it, it would look better” sounds like license to me…

So who gets a recommendation? I saw the recent powdercoating thread and saw star enamelers mentioned but are they in Sydney??

there is a fairly new bike store on Toorak road, right up the Punt Rd. end next to the 7/11 who does this sort of stuff.

They have an old Malvern Star in there, ALOT of handpainted goodies on it, some amazing pinstriping.
I have only talked to them briefly when he first opened shop, it was pretty empty and he said it should be up and running in a few weeks with some track frames/ complete fixed gear bikes, but have never/ or know anyone who has used them. That was about a month ago.
I think they do frame powdercoats for around $80.

It could be worth a look, if you go talk to them, id be interested in knowing what they are all about.

Star is very good, and in Sydney… you can freight it up with transdirect for probably $30. I guess Paconi is the go in Melbs.

star enamel.

yes, they take forever but for $300 including freight - unmatched.

kiwicyclists pogliaghi. need I say more.

that would have been wolfy, worked with him till he moved to this new shop…he knows his stuff, you can trust him. The malvern star is his…i tell you it rides even better than it looks.

Try Paconi in Braeside. We send most, if not all of our frame repairs to Paconi, as their work is A+ and has a quick turnaround. They’ve been doing it for a long time now, they have a pretty strong name in the business.

Thread dig

If I get lazy and don’t do this myself agian , where should I take my 753.

I had my 731 fillet brazed frame fixed by Gellie, not expensive.

Thread dig #2.

Anyone dealt with Sun Graphics? His work looks amazing, but my recent e-mail exchange has been a tad frustrating.

Also interested in updates on good options here, been wading though the past thread but it seems a lot of guys are out of business now. Curious what the up to date options are, looking to get my Kuwahara repainted and based on what people were saying it sounds like if I want it right it’s got to be enamel.

Will keep that in mind, he is a nice guy, spoke for ages riding home from kinglake once.

doing the paintwork and decals myself

Going to give a quick plug here for Geoff Duke (http://gdukehandmadebicycles.com.au/)

He repaired a crack/made a gusset and had my frame powdercoated. Works from his garage in East Brunswick.

Mmm, just had a quote of around $1k to do an proper respray (not powder coat), metallic with rainbow flake and decals under clearcoat for my frame, tbh I would rather buy a new frame for a little more than that price since while I really like mine, it’s just not worth that kind of money for a proper paint job. Probably could find a lower quote but, not sure what others have paid for quality, real paint jobs.

Alternative would be powder coating and there at least seem to be a few options but people definitely seem to discourage powder coating lugged frames. Though at least it would give it some more life and get things moving.

^ Sounds like Sun Graphics’ standard quote! You could probably get a better price from an auto sprayer, but you’ll need to do the decals yourself and probably masking threads. There was somebody on here a while ago who did this and it looked like a pretty good job - I’ll see if I can find it.

Found it: http://www.fixed.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=28088&highlight=hoffy

^ Thanks for that, will mull my options. Look like they are old school so will have to pick up the phone to find out more. They still seem to be in business though! Lots of places mentioned in the older threads here have disappeared.

Incidentally for reference and others thinking about powder coating, A-Class (http://aclasspowdercoating.com) just came back with a quote of $123.75 including cleaning for frame and forks powder coating. Sounds like a few people have used them and were happy.

Haven’t called the auto guys yet. Haven’t really decided which direction to go, power coating seems is inexpensive and easy and pretty durable. If I was as lucky as the guy you linked to, with blasting I am guessing I would end up at about double the price for the spray job (still well short of the first quote!).

I never really had an issue with the other frame I had power coated and it was lugged and the reality is I just want the frame refreshed to ride, not to put on the wall so leaning towards coating, it if wasn’t for the insanely good looking job that eTomato had on the modified Kuwahara I probably wouldn’t have given it a second thought when thinking about what to do with mine.

A few mates have used A-class with good results

Have use aclass and as I’ve stated before, Great service and workmanship! The lady at the counter is a little bizarre but they’re good people.

Had my commuter fixed conversion powder coated by A-class a number of years ago. Very happy with how the powder coating has stood up to the abuse.

I have an old school ego trainer I am planning to strip and get powder coated, so will be taking it to them when I do.

Had a more reasonable quote for spraying now, basically $400 consisting of $100 for blasting and $300 of painting. Road Runner Frame Repairs, not sure if anyone has used them. Guess I need to decide if I want to fork out for a real point job or just get the powder coat and spend the balance on something else.
