Gong Ride, 26th June

You gota get off the dodgy indian first…

I had a good time too. Pulled up better than I thought I would this morning.

Thanks to everyone for hanging around waiting for me. I didn’t have a computer or anyone to compare speed with, but some of those descents in RNP were freaky fun! The climbs, not so much. After you all left the pub, I made it another 7 kms before calling it quits.

Now I’ve got a few bike issues to sort out before next time, plus some training to do so I can keep up with everyone… (ok, so maybe not everyone but at least a few of you).

Thats what its all about Keirin. No one was angry that we had to wait a little for you so don’t feel bad about it at all. We’d rather wait a bit than for you not to come at all.
The upside to doing rides like this is that other rides (lapa runs etc) will seem really really easy in comparison. It’s how you get better!

Yeah, was a smart thing to do Keirin, just riding at your own pace. Better than pinning it for the first 40km and having nothing left in the tank for the last 40km. None of us minded waiting about and it was good to break the ride up a bit.

I feel pretty good today actually apart from a general lack of energy (probably has something to do with the fact that I havent had breakfast yet though) Coping ok at work.

I was pretty happy after the ride, I only had to walk 2 short sections of hills (the section where Rhys chucked, and the little one after the sea cliff bridge) because they were both too stupidly steep to ride on the gear I had. I did manage to stay at the pointy end of the pack for most of the ride and also (apart from those 2 pinchy climbs) beat Zac up every climb of the day! (incl Albian st! ha ha) From the 40km mark I had to just manage my cramps though. Pushing that big a gear for that long is a recipie for lactic acid. Shame cause I still had heaps of energy left at the end of the ride. Must have been the snakes!

Weather was perfect. Nice and cool, and the wet roads kept most of the cars and bikes away. Then the sun came out with about 10km to go. Perfect!

I reckon we should do it bi-monthly.

I’m in. I had the best fun on a bike for about 2 years. Additionally, I will be peaking in about 2 months.

Yeah the weather was awesome. I was really pleased with the turnout too, we have a really good bunch of guys that I was happy to ride with. I think bi-monthly is a good idea, if we do these too often then they lose meaning and people won’t look forward to them so much.
Those twistys through the RNP were amazing to ride.

I think I got the route right, couldn’t find the elevation on bikely. On that descent into Stanwell Park we drop 260 metres of elevation in 2.5km! No wonder Zack hit 78km/h. At that point I realised that the colour of adrenalin is brown.

Gmaps Pedometer

Curiously I make it 82km.

Thanks all for a great day. The ride was a blast, the pub fun as usual. Next on the list is find my descent balls - Rhys, Terence, Zak & Nathan were flying. Those twisties through the RNP were amazing, the hills were hard but good fun - though Terence & Carlin didn’t seem to notica haha.

See you all soon.

Gmap pedometer is doing some funky stuff along the route where it takes funny turns, but the main problem is between your 30km and 40km marks where it’s got us going backwards and forwards along the Princes Hwy.

Bikely elevation should be from the ‘Show_Elevation Profile’ option in the menu. Lemme see if I can get a pic of it …

For the record Nathan I beat you up the first big climb…
And I’m not the beat climber… I’m trying to get better but it’s slow progress!
And you can clam traffic all you like on the last blast down but the traffic was fine when I called on the right and steamed past ya

I’m going to get it over 80 next time!

Yep, that was one of the sections I mentioned above that I had to walk…

Its easy to steam past when you still have some gears left and I’ve already spun out.
I spun out on every descend, so I couldn’t hit the high speed like you guys early on. Everyone passed me pushing big gears at the top, but then used way more brakes than me on the way down, so I caught whoever was in front of me every time, but couldn’t pass.
I was catching you and Rhys in that last big one when I came up behind Dunc and had to wash off some speed when he had a ‘moment’, then my bag swung around on me as I was spinning like mad trying to pass him. Same thing with the first hill in the natio, I was stuck behind a car who was giving Rod some room, and also the 2nd big descend in the natio when I came up on Brad and tried to pass on the outside, ran wide onto the wrong side of the road and had to wash off more speed.
I raced downhill national series in A grade for a few years. I know how to descend.

Next time gadget… Next time. (maybe I’ll run an even bigger gear! :P)

Now now lads. We are all friends here.

Hey. Thanks for the ride. I agree, that it was a really good bunch to roll with. Good times.

I don’t, I was shrieking like a woman all the way down.

I raced motor bikes, under powered ones that were only fast if you ride around coners fast…
That last decent was crazy
I only really used the brakes in one set of s’s and pushed it hard enough through the coners to clip a pedal on the way out of one.
For the record I’d dumped the box when we dropped into it… I always do…
This time next week I’ll have on 11t to use as well as the 12…
Can’t wait.
You got to get a nice roadie bro

RULE 12:
The minimum number of bikes one should own is three.₪ The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned.₪ This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Well done everybody! I vote for the return leg but maybe miss the park or if you are feeling energetic both.
No pain, no gain…

Any pics up yet?

climbing back up from stanwell would be hell after all of that…
we’ll have to do it some time though…

I have put the photos i took up on The Leather Saddle a bicycle diary
