HAPPY FRIDAY Do the evolution baby

2013, bought another cheap Fuji ($36) for kids work, since stripped and frame hanging in shed:

2013, first real track:

Put on some quality cranks:

Then got it wrong:

Then got it right:

Oh yeah, and this thing, 2012:

Sold as a frame mid-2013.

I’m sure I’ve missed something…

First fixed commuter, circa late '05.
Started out as a dirty old Hillman roadie from mid 70’s scored complete on ebay for fifty bucks. Gordon Hill was kind enough to look through the build cards for me to identify it - the lugs were nailed which I thought was kind of cool

Everything on this build was a bodge of some sort:

Frame: brake bridge re-drilled and frame powdercoated by GripSport (not actually by him, I found out later).
Fork: from a bin at the back of bicycle recycle, steerer thread was farked and needed recutting. didn’t have a quill stem so used quill adapter and ahead stem off an old MTB.
Bars: $10 bargain bin drops, flipped and chopped (mounting the aero brake levers was a hard afternoon’s work…bar had to be drilled on an angle just-so and cable run internally to get the cable run to work…NEVER doing that again).
Crankset: some $10 shitter thing off ebay, chainrings needed (home-made) spacers for chainline
Wheels: off the original roadie. Suicide hub…of course, with an old bottom bracket lock ring thrown on for good measure, QR axle tossed & replaced with fixed axle scrounged from somewhere or other.
TIME layback seatpost cost more than the rest of the bike
and the minoura under-seat bottle mount arrangement lasted less than a week. Was literally a pain in the arse.

After all that, the frame was ultimately too small and the ancient 531 a bit noodly for my liking. But it was a ton o’ fun and the learning was invaluable (mostly learning what things to avoid EVER doing again again). But there was only Dan Hale and about half a dozen regulars on fixed.org for consultaion…and NO production fixxays around to copy off. I posted it on that old geezers’s fixie forum in the US (can’t remember what it was called) and got complimentary emails and requests for build advice for years after.

Shall add more rides in due course.

post em up!

you’re the only one who buys a new bike every other week though. In the 5 years since I posted up there I’ve got a new commuter/adventure bike and a new cargo bike, and sold most of the rest.

My bikes in my FOA-membership era. Photos from my 2014 post are gone, so reposting and adding bikes since then.

Pogliaghi track (2008-2011ish)
My first nice fixie.

SE Draft fixed (2009ish)
Built this up for wet weather riding so my nice fixie would stay nice.

KHS Flite fixed (2009ish to 2015ish)
This replaced the SE as the wet weather commuter, then became my main commuter for years.

Dengfu carbon roadie (2011ish to 2016ish)
First real road bike.

Voodoo Nakisi commuter (2013ish-current)
Bought this frame to build up as a gravel and touring bike. Has since become my main commuter.

Scott Spark 29er (2015-2019)
First real mountain bike.

Stainless SS (2016 to 2018)
Around 2016 I started wanting a SS again, and found this. Wish I never sold it.

All-City Nature Boy (2016 to 2018)
Bought this for gravel when my Voodoo became too much of a commuter with dynamo lights and racks etc.

Makino track (2016-2017)
Also started getting a fixie craving again and built this up.

Holdsworth steel roadie (2016 to 2017)
Felt like it was time to upgrade the Dengfu with a nice roadie.

Curve Grovel gravel (2017-current)
After riding the All-City gravel for a couple of years and the Holdsworth, I decided I wanted a better gravel bike at the cost of a nicer road bike. Built this up with 650x49 and 700x30 wheelsets to cover both bases. Haven’t looked back.

Larry fixed (2018)
After selling the Makino I wanted a pub fixie.

Surly Steamroller fixed (2018-current)
The Larry rode like a turd and I found this frame cheap.

Focus carbon roadie (2018)
Did I say I never looked back after building the Curve? Well, I did look back briefly and rode this for a bit. Then I sold it and didn’t look back for real.

Norco Fat bike (2019-current)
Wanted more adventure, and snow. So I sold the Scott MTB and got this to cover more adventurous rides and with a Bluto fork I can still hit the MTB trails.
