wanting to know whether i should go the japanese way or the italian way.
i know the campy ones will be much more expensive but are they better quality? and if i dont get campy ones i’ll probably get some 75’s. if i do… are they a good crank or comparable to say campy record track cranks?
I think you’d be hard pressed to notice any difference between the 2 in quality, as they are both some of the best track cranks on the market. I’d (and do) have Campagolos over the 75s only because IMO they look better and polish up a treat. Campagnolos also pop up used on ebay far more frequently than 75s (on second thoughts this might not be a good thing).
Sugino’s are cheaper and both top of the line track cranks. get the 75’s and save some coin. and the 75’s come in colors.
good luck
before you jump to conclusions try wiggle for campy pista cranks…
they are cheaper that you think
$366 au
with a chainring if you get a good chain ring with your 75’s they are going to come close…
in saying that i run sugino grand mighty cranks and i love em… had 75’s to and they are also shit hot…
if your running japanese running gear all round then match it up with the cranks if your whip is all italian then you know what to do…
Cyclists can be a bunch of inbreeding racist cunts sometimes.
notice the amount they have in stock though. and with the way wiggle is at the moment with dispatch…
dispatch at wiggle is ‘act of god’ material right now and if it says 2-7 days then i have found they don’t fuck around to much…
maybe they just don’t carry any stock cause people don’t order em enough to make it worth while…
If you’re going Campy, do what I did and go to eBay - The UK’s Online Marketplace (instead of eBay Australia - Buy or sell practically anything on eBay, the world’s online marketplace) and ask a seller if they’ll deliver to Australia. They go for a bit cheaper. I bought mine recently, 1 year old with a 48t Campy chainring 170mm length for AUD$265. Could save some coin!
dura-ace FTW!!!
can someone pls spell out for me the sugino quality heirarchy? and talk slow - i’m taking notes.
grand mighty, sugino 75, messenger/RD. just look at the prices, bb
pfft … Stonglight 49D !!!
Lighter than all your poseur cranks, over 80 years old and still going strong, infinite setup possibilities (track, double, triple even quadruple if you wish), road, mtb, porteur, track, cross, bmx … but not for tricks, they’re have self respect ![]()
Stronglight cotterless cranks

Better still, Velo Orange have made their own version The Velo ORANGE Blog: Grand Cru Crank
Plenty of old steel chainrings around to suit this style of crank and they last forever (well, a lot longer than you guys have been around).
Agreed, you’d be surprised at the price of Record cranks from the UK… I went one better than Wiggle, and paid $244 for mine. PM me for details. No, it’s not dodgy, it’s just that I’d just get in shit if I posted the details publicly.
I just put my fluted campag pistas onto a bike and find they have a flex in them I don’t like. I’ve got 75s on my other ride which, personally, i prefer to the campags. Dunno if this is because the campags are 165 and the suginos are 170mm or not.
explain to me this flex from your cranks?
that sounds insane and if i was going campag, id trawl ebay for a deal like that.
but i think im swinging towards the sugino because ive already got some japanese stuff and i like the style of the suginos.
anyone else think the new campy cranks are a little ugly?
Interesting reading regarding Sugino Grand Mighty vs Sugino 75:
What does the Grand Mighty have? Most of the cost is in the forging. Instead of something like three forging passes on the 75, the Grand Mighty has an amazing 26. This means it’s much stiffer and individual parts such as the spider and the area around the pedal threads are much more resistant to impact damage or to flexion. If you fall (or get hit) hard enough to snap your crank, you probably have other bigger worries.
The finish on the Grand Mighty is mighty Mighty. It’s a gorgeous finish and happens to be extremely resistant to corrosion, oxidation blooms, and the like. So it’ll keep looking gorgeous while the 75 will look a bit punky after a while. And if you use toe straps, the clear anodized finish on the 75 will disappear in days, but the gold Grand Mighty finish will last a lot longer.
The milling of the square taper on the Grand Mighty is more precise (both done to size more accurately and also more precisely in the center of the crank) than on the 75. This plus the superior forging means you can take it on and off a lot more than a 75 before it doesn’t quite go on as straight, and it is more likely to give you a truly centered chainring (people ***** about chainrings not being round when the problem is usually that the square taper was milled off-center, causing the whole shebang to be off-center, and no change in chainring will correct it).
yeah, but which ones look cooler, horatio? get your priorities right, brother…
suginos are nice light and super stiff but aren`t perfectly simetrical
campys are really nice but are expensive
sram omniums are the stiffest track cranks on the market
they come with a external BB and a 48t chainring RRP is 400 but you could get some for about 250
Hey Spirito- I was almost going to PM you after your help in my labours getting them off one bike and onto another. The campags seem to have a slight side to side flex ie in - out, or at least that’s how it seems. I’m definitely getting major noise from them as well. Took the approach not to grease the spindles but had to give in when they creaked too much.
