Heavymetal's commuter bike manifesto

Not mine, and not finished, but getting there.

geez, thats a big bag

lol

…that’s what she said…

that one of those freight/swift rack bags? i always imagine them being stuffed full of pizza’s on their way around a city. Think i saw this bike a couple of weeks ago, beewdifull, maybe feel a little too practical riding away on the surly

Swift Polaris. Room for daily commuting and expands to hold a shopping trip as well.

Well thought I should put this up here finally, my CX, tourer, rando everything bike.

Habanero Ti Cx frame with Surly cross check forks for touring got some easton carbon forks at home as well.

Just put new crankset on, Sugino ‘compact-plus’ cranks, with 46-30 rings. Coming from a MTB triple to this feels good, 30mm diff in Q.

Also put on new Shimano cx-70 fr. derailleur, much lighter action that the 105 on previous and top pull so no need for the pulley.

Even though its marketed as a cx/tourer it isn’t really stiff enough to handle fully loaded front and rear touring, but is really nice with only front panniers and frame bag instead of a bar bag.

excuse the half/half touring pedals and slightly crossed chain.

I bought this guy back at Christmas.

After some beard farming, some frame mods by Tristram at Commuter, a new coat of paint and much part collecting it came out like this.

Really happy with how it turned out.

Saw that progressing during frame mods and at the MGG. And did we pass each other in Nth Fitzroy today?

Looking pretty damn good, but what is up with your lever positioning!?

(That extra cable at the dyno and along the down tube needs a trim and restraint too, asking to get snagged and torn.)

Yeah we passed in North Fitzroy today, I tried to give a nod but I was lost in my own little world.

The dyno cable was originally a lot more taught and has worked its way loose. I picked up on some restraining tips off the iBob list and am fixing it up this weekend. Been playing with the lever positioning since I got those bars (hence the cheapo cork tape). They have lots of reach so it’s been hard to get it right.

Took in some of Perths epidemic modern art.

Nice bike, doesn’t fit the brief.

Perhaps try some shorter reach bars (Soma HWY ONE for example comes in silver with a 26.0 clamp) / stem with decent lever position so you can operate the levers properly in the drops. Hopefully the frame’s not too big!

That is a road bike. Also, get some bartape.

Beard farming?
That should be a thing!

Andy are those geasrs friction or indexed?

I’m using clamp on Suntour Cyclone shifters. Friction. Interestingly there is a little something brazed the underside of the downtube to keep them in place.

Hi Blakey. I had another missed connection with you in Fitzroy North the other day.

If anything the frame is probably a bit small (I’m 190cm). Those VO Rando bars do have a lot of reach, I was trying to get a smooth transition from bar to hood, rushed it and haven’t made any effort to fix. Will get off the computer and do it now.

My ‘new’ pub/shops bike including the ugliest - but possibly the cheapest - portuer rack about Melb.

Its a ‘raceline’ flatbar CX, got on ebay for $100. Only thing I’ve done is put on the Gullwing bars from Abbotsford, originally had some flat bars, not fun for cruising about and swap the CX tyres for my touring ones.

Had my tubus rack on the rear for a while but decided it was a bit of an over investment, did a risors/rack trade today with Dromedary so put a cheaper rear rack on for panniers when I gotta haul stuff.

Front rack is a mini $15 one from abbotsford cycles, plastic tray I found in the garden (its just cable tied on), $4 of bungee cord and a $2 shop set of ‘S’ hooks- bent out a little to fit thru the holes in the tray. I drilled a heap of holes so the cords can lattice what ever is in there and conform to odd shapes… Might try and suss a heavier duty tray at some point. Carries a six pack easily - though might need some support struts for anything too much heavier.

edit: think I should have tried to find smaller hooks.

Those VO long reach bars are not as good as I thought they’d be, got em on my tourer. Need the Soma hwy ones for sure.

Last time I checked this thread title has “commuter” and “whatever” in it.

Cyclists of the Internet…

Does anyone know much about the various Rohloff models? I thought I had it figured out but I think I may have overlooked something.

The hub is intended for a Surly Crosscheck as a tourer/towing/shopper etc. Obviously it has horizontal dropouts so it needs the threaded spindle (TS) version. I’ll be using rim brakes, but I like the idea of building the wheel with the disc hub in case I decide to go down that road in the future.

I thought I had seen a disc TS hub with non-OEM axle plates and external cable routing. So it was a TS/EX/DB or something. Have I imagined this? I cant seem to find it anymore. The only DB/TS ones I can find seem to have the OEM plates which I dont think will work.

there is a appropriate model a friend has the exact same hub/frame setup.

Rolhoff have this speedhub finder thingy which guides you through all the details as they pertain to your frame/setup:

edit: oops, just saw the thing about disc brakes… now not so sure, my mate was running rim only.
