The stays are available from Bicycle Parts Wholesalers (Incomex) I don’t recall what they cost, worthwhile. But your LBS will be able to source them pretty easily.
The rack I got was from Max Power at Abbotsford Cycles, I think they might still have some. I’m not sure who they source them from.
I made the conversion with the two as my Carbon forks dont have a drill hole to mount the rack back to… therefore it wouldn’t hold any significant load without ripping my cantis studs out.
Yeah I’m not super fast either, sounds like I’ll have to get out on some dirt rides with people who know good trails and maybe practise some dismounts (fall on my side).
no one claimed it so ive given this old trucker the once over(well, commuter gave it the once over, i just paid them)
playing around with bar set up’s at the moment, these shorter/narrower bars dropped down a few spacers have made it feel a bit zippier in the city but havent been out on a long ride yet, planning some overnight camping trips asap
still on the lookout for some front panniers too, certainly fond of the built by swift short stacks but cant justify that cost yet
Setup a saved search on ebay for some Ortliebs. Plenty of very lightly used ones out there for little money. I prefer the Sport Packer Plus model to the Front Roller, has a pocket on the outside, mushroomable top closure, inside stash section, just not submersible-proof.
BTW that front surly rack is hella heavy (1.38kg!), there are other much lighter options out there like the Tubus Tara at 360g. If you want the front platform, even adding a “Nashbar” (Abbotsford have them) rack (Nashbar Front Rack - Normal Shipping Ground) won’t get you anywhere near the Surly weight, and gives you the option to use one or both. Sell the Surly to some fred and use the proceeds to get the Tubus/Nashbar combo.
Oh, and those tyres, whilst bulletproof and long lived, are pretty slow rolling. Resist Nomad / Compass 26" / Schwalbe supermoto etc are lighter and better rolling, an upgrade to consider later.
Otherwise, nice shed score and good karma for trying to find the owner!
yeah I have heard those Surly racks aren’t the best, all those little attachment pieces to break.
+1 to a tubus tara.
or…
Nitto Campee, has removable lowriders, but alot of coin.
Keep an eye on evanscycles.com they often have deals on ortlieb and tubus stuff, plus them and probikekit are some of the few big name places that seem to stock both brands which is odd considering they are the same company.
