Heavymetal's commuter bike manifesto

Thanks! I highly recommend the rSogn frame.

Just this one and the Travesty shops-bike.

I use a standard sport bagman with a low-saddle longflap bag. works great. you might need the expedition support with the camper. shoot carradice an email, I’m sure they’ll help you out with advice.

Rowan: nice setup. CrossChecks are so good for long commuting.

Until recently I used a Longflap on a daily basis. I don’t have a rack for it because I run Surly Nice Racks on my tourer and they’d get in the way. I love it, it fits change of clothes, lunch, laptop and books. I’ve broken a few straps (cos of lack of rack), but other than that I’d say flawless. Looks the business too. Makes you look like an English literature professor.

Blakey, Yup, that’s one awesome setup you’ve got there. So into the porteur rack. Very handsome bike in the flesh too I might add.

A package from JensonUSA on Friday containing 1 x 52cm Cross check frameset, Rival brifters & Salsa Cowbell 3 bars. Super stoked! A final build will be some time off but its a good start me thinks.

I was sorely tempted by the rSogn, but ended up going with the ol’ faithful Cross Check - a bit too short for the smallest rSogn size. :frowning:

BTW what do people think is a good touring rim? Been looking at the Mavic A719 and Velocity Synergy

A719 is bulletproof.

Seconded, there were some Synergy QC issues (possibly fixed by now), but the A719 is so tuff you spell it with two fs.

IIRC Angry has a 52cm CC/Steamroller and a MD rSogn. But no matter, the CC is a good rock solid frame.

If you want to get rolling quick smart, I have an 8speed nexus hubgear, arc/flat bars with nexus levers all cabled and ready that you could loaner for a while. Good for kiddy haulin’!

Wow, thanks heaps Blakey! I might take you up on that offer if it stands in the new year.

But no kiddy haulin’ just yet - probably a year off at least.

Nice setup MikeD. Details?

No probs, it’s just waiting in the wings currently. There’s STI shifters for it too.

Its a “prototype” Bianchi Cx bike, Reynolds 531. Least thats what the German guy (in Melb) I bought it off said. It handles surprisingly well loaded, so I suspect it not really a ‘race’ style Cx, more an allrounder, it can handle 40c tyres with mudgards so it is pretty versatile.

As a Cx bike it had an SRAM apex cranks, Dura-Ace to DTswiss wheels, Xt Derailleur, Salsa wood chipper bars with ~2cm of their ends cut off, 9spd bar end shifters, Cane creek levers, and interupters, recently put on Tektro CR720 cantis.

The only part changes for touring was a Deore triple crank, and Schwalbe Marathon Cross tyres 700x40c.

Rear rack is a Tubus Logo, it has lower bars to mount panniers to help offset the ‘higher’ BB. Front rack is a Blackburn I scavenged. Ortlieb classic panniers rear, borrowed Dueters front.

In action in the beautiful Otways:

All sorted and just in time too. Got the long flap camper with SQR expedition bagman. Works a treat and has plenty of room for change of clothes, thongs, lunch, tools, ipod, phone etc. and could easily swallow a pair of shoes on top of that. Made my first commute in today with it. It’s going to be 36deg here in Perth today and I had the pleasure of a sweat free back this morning. Summer commuting will be sooo much better than with a messenger bag.

Just built this for the wifey.

What would people suggest for a disc specific commuter/touring rim?
I was thinking a Velocity Blunt SL.
