We’re gonna need some pics of the Z.
+1

Test fitting front end panels after I rebuilt the sheet metal around the bonnet-hinge area under the headlight bucket:

How it looks now

Next few weeks I should have full new bushings ordered, all suspension re-coated in glossy chassis black, and all underbody bolts re-plated nice new fresh and gold looking.
More pics of total progress here if anyone’s interested in a bit of a browse.

Side note; I also have a rusty red '71 Z. No floors, A-pillars are fucked inside out, needs new roof, 1/4 panels, etc. It’s totally cactus. Will hack into that one after I’ve finished this gold thing, built my bike and tidied up my Silvia a little bit.
Let me tells you it sucks doing all this shit on a woolies part time wage while halfway through uni.
Pics in your post do not work for me.
try unticking the “store locally” or whatever it is tick box in the image insert menu
Are you planning anything special for the engine?
You’ve got yourself a nice build there mate, but yeah what are you planning for the engine? A bloke I’ve met a few times at hillclimbs has a Z, with a holden gen III v8 hooked up to an all wheel drive system, needless to say he is pretty much the quickest thing going. I’m assuming you are planning something a little less ridiculous. LOL.
Cheers, that should do the trick.
the '77 has had it’s original matching # engine block sent to some wicked datto L-engine guru (the best in all the lands). Been bored out to 2.8 liters, 9.5:1 CR, triple 40mm Solex carbs. 6-2 headers and from headers back I’m saving up for a replica of the OEM optional(?) exhaust that came out in Japan. Basically twin exhausts that split up and wrap around the diff for better ground clearance, then come back together with a twin tip that’s stacked vertically. Rad shit. Engine and exhaust cost almost twice as much as I bought the rest of the car for heheh. But I got the whole car for a tidy price so it’s okay. Kinda weird story, but the previous owner sent the motor to be built, left it at the shop for months, put car up for sale, and basically if I wanted the car I had to wear the costs of the engine rebuild.
EDIT: Dooby is that the purple thing??? Ugly as hell but god damn it’s quick, if it’s the one I’m thinking of hhehe
out of curiosity who’s doing the engine? (I used to be a fairly half assed mechanic at a shop specialising in Z’s from 240 to 350)
I never worked on the solex but heard good things.
The original 240 SUalikes were amazingly easy to tune even for members of the console gaming generation like me
Les Collins of Datrally fame of old, over in victoria. Yeah I hear lots of good things about roundtop SU’s. Honestly if the motor wasn’t already done I’d just do new rings/bearings myself, 240 SU’s and be done with it. I ain’t really one who cares too much about kw figures etc, but in this case the decision was already made so its an easy one
G’day guys, I’m Sam, been hanging around FOA for a while so thought I’d introduce myself. I get around on a black charge plug, an old yellow malvern star pub roadie with a rear gamoh rack, a merida scultura roadie or, if its nice out, my bright green Dodici Special. Im mostly found around the city or on hill rides, never really done any racing, but would be keen to get down to the velodrome sometime and maybe get amongst some CX races!
Fellas!,- spook here; I get around town fixed on a Reid Harrier- black frame, red deep-V’s, blue handlebar grips and godforsaken Quando hubs. No Hate please. I also like skidding down that gravel path the construction workers have built between the Elder Park rotunda and the Festival Centre. It’s like being at the snow on a bike. I’m new to the forum because I’ve just caved to the power of the internet. yoroshiku onegaishimasu.
Hey lads I’m Alex. At the moment I’m kicking around on a red '83 colnago pista with chrome forks, mavic CXP14 hoops laced to DA big flange hubs. Apart from that she’s pretty stock. no stickers so it doesn’t look like much but rides well. Haven’t worked out how to skid yet, except when going about 2kmph but that doesn’t really count. Currently looking at upgrading to something a little quicker for uni.
Welcome!
There seems to be a LOT of Alex’s around here
Bike sounds nice, any pics?
Skidding is easier at faster speeds I reckon. Lean forward, give it little hop if you need help to break traction, lock that rear leg!
I don’t have any recent ones after the respray but here’s what it looked like about a year ago. Different wheels too

Hi all,
My name’s Mike, I just moved here from Perth and am living with friends in a big house down in Unley. I’m working on the other side of the city so I’m fanging it through the city most of the time. I’m currently riding the most beat up internet-special of unknown origin that I picked up a while ago from a friend in Perth. He had a drug attack and painted it with permanent marker and house paint. I cleaned it up a touch to show off some of the bogan gold deep V rims but it’s mostly marker painted still. I didn’t want to move anything expensive over here with me so I just brought this bash.
Currently have one of the new Leader Renovatio framesets on order and a bunch of components in the post for it. All black, nice and plain and will be pretty hard to tell apart from a $200 Create, but mostly Cinelli/SRAM bits with a H+Son/Phil Wood wheelset. Building yourself is real nice, can’t wait for everything to arrive.
Hope to see some more fixed riders around! Haven’t seen much craziness on the roads since I moved; friends of mine in Perth are absolutely insane and I’ve had too many hairy moments trying to stay on their back tyres going through big intersections and the like. Maniacs. Riding mostly on my own here but it’d be nice to meet up with some people who do like to push the boundaries a little.
MikDee, is that you?
There was a group that rode on Tuesday nights. There’s a thread on here about it.
As for “pushing the boundaries” type of riding, I’m not 100% sure what you mean about that. Do you mean running reds and stuff? It’s kinda dumb.
I think he means stacking as many PBR’s in his rack as he can fit, and then some.
In that case, bring it on!
Sweet, I will keep an eye out for it. As for the second part, yeah I should have been more clear about that, sorry. Not running reds, more just riding hard and finding interesting routes and the like. I find it helps riding with people who are fitter and stronger and more confident as it pulls you up to their level a lot quicker than riding alone where you have nothing to benchmark against, that’s all!
As for the PBRs, I don’t drink but I would duct tape heaps of bananas to my frame to eat in transit in lieu of that.
Sweet. This is called “bike riding”, or sometimes “cycling” by those in the know. Have fun with the radelaide kids, looks like a good few weeks coming up with the TDU and whatnot.
