if i was to keep a goldfish on my desk at work would that a) be kinda awesome for a bit, then annoying and b) more of a hassle than it’s worth in an office environment (ie - cleaning)? it’s just a small bowl, more of a vase shaped like a fishbowl. was thinkin a little fish, some stones and a little plant.
worth it?

Don’t do it rolly, goldfish are messy fish that can grow quite large, to keep them in a small space is just cruel.
They really need 60L of water per fish, the only reason they ever stay small is stunted growth.
Small tanks are harder to keep as the water parameters (temp, nutrients, pH, water hardness etc etc) are less stable

i had two bettas in huge vases.
they’re pretty ok, one would jump out of the water to grab food from my fingers.
Just because they can survive, doesn’t mean they have quality of life.
I reckon it’s a pretty cruel practice

Before vegan days I was pretty into fish tanks, and was pretty shocked to discover that goldfish, as keith says, need 20 gallons per fish, and should live to at least 40.
So, yeh, the fact your goldfish lived for three years isn’t impressive at all.
For it to be even near to humane, the tank has to be fucking massive, and all the little details have to be right.
Sure, their just fish, but fuck it, they’re alive and shit.

Small planted tanks can be amazing, but are a hell of a lot of work.
Tiny fish and shrimp can live happily in these set ups
I’ll post up a pic of my small tank when it has grown in a bit
