Jeez, my 110 is a bit cumbersome at the best of times… there is an underground carpark here which has tight switchbacks on the exit ramps, which are far too tight for the turning radius.
I spent the Melb cup long weekend driving the FJ Cruiser around Wyperfield and Big Desert National Parks with two other guys with FJs. Great fun and I learned so much about the FJ and soft sand driving. So much soft sand that you’d need a fat bike if you were cycling. We spent a lot of time in low range. I also learned how not to pack a 4WD when the going gets very bumpy. Snowdrift camp area is the best campsite in the whole area, both for sight-seeing and facilities.
There was one area they called the sand bucket which is just off the White Springs track. It’s just a big sand bowl surrounded by 5-10 metre dunes. Very safe and great fun to muck around.
We didn’t get over to the western side because of fires but apparently there’s less sand and more clay and gravel. Worst thing was the flies. So many flies. Swarms that didn’t go away until after sunset. No mossies when we were there probably because it was so dry. We drove around the basin of Lake Hindmarsh for a bit.
Here’s me totally failing to climb a dune. The other two guys made it up but they had bigger tyres with lower pressure and were better drivers.
