technically, bikes are required to be sold with 2 brakes, reflectors, bell and all the standard safety features. retailers can be fined up to $1 million for not complying with these regulations but it has absolutely no bearing on the regulations for operating a bicycle on a public road. obviously these differ from state to state, but in victoria it’s something like a $150 fine for riding brakeless.
But where did this come from? Oh to be a fly on the wall at the ACCC
I wonder what the odds are:
- Grumpy bike shops that have either missed the boat on the ‘craze’ or dismissed it as a fad, and are now regretting their decision not to ‘get on board’, seeking ‘revenge’ on ‘new’ ‘upstart’ ‘gourmet’ ‘bespoke’ (I went there) bike shops ‘making a killing’(1)
Wild guess: * bike ‘advocacy’ groups participating in a little bloodletting to look busy and/or responsible to improve relationship with the Government / Road Lobby / The Man / Other - Someone’s precious darling has come off their brand new Mongoose Ralph^WMaurice that they flipped the rear on to ‘feel the zen thing’ without retention and scabbed their knee / lost a tooth, and they’ve sued the shit out of the LBS, who have passed on their losses to the importer
- Self-hating, self-harming hipster subcult/cabal/Protocols of the Elders of, trying to collapse the trend in on itself to purge the unclean and unworthy and start anew
- Slow news week
- Stick a fork in a hipster week
(1) bike shops specialising in FG bikes might not actually be making a killing
how about
*the ACCC just doing their job
if you dont like that bikes have to be sold with brakes, reflectors etc why dont you all go to your local MP’s office and tell them this is a huge issue in your life and the lives of many others, better yet everyone get together, grab your pitchforks and storm parliment house
this thread was better when it was off-topic. just to clear the air and get back off-topic, here is a summary of what this thread is about, then we can all sleep easy.
-
bike shops must sell bikes equipped with a front and rear brake, reflectors and a bell, unless the bike is primarily used as a track bike, which don’t have brakes
-
the cops will fine you for not having brakes on your bike if you’re riding it on the street if they want to.
Sorted?
k, now let’s get back to more off-topic nonsense please
how did the end of that free beer and vodka bar go jams?
yeah, twas alright, i still have no idea why it happened though, seems weird to give away free booze all night when there’s not an associated product to flog. i know it was for a shop, but aside from some photos being taken nothing really happened. i headed off before i got too messy as i had work the next day. unlike last night when i stupidly drank till 1am then got to work 3 hours late…
i like the way you do things jams
couldn’t agree more.
i thought it was for that other someday/somewhere/something shop in curtain house too.
until i found some random magazine on a table saying otherwise.
i would have gone in there and not bought overpriced goods rather than the one on marais. (having said that i have shopped at the actual shop and the girl was lovely).
but free boze is free booze, and 50m from home is even better.
