Narrow/wide chainrings

So I been thinking about getting a narrow/wide chainring for my 1x9 road commuter thing that I’m building and have some questions.

1: do I need a clutch derailleur to use one? I’ve read that they are recommended for mtbs, but this isn’t a mtb.

2: are there any that arnt super ugly? The raceface ones are heinous. And the wolf tooth ones only come in black. silver would be good.

3: are they effective? I don’t wanna run a chain keeper anymore. So I feel one might help with that.

4: can i run a 9 speed chain through a 10 speed derailleur? i think with Narrow/wide chainrings you need a 10speed chain anyway. Will a 10 speed chain work with 9 speed casstette?

I’m running 130bcd road cranks fyi.

Advice would be helpful

shanks.

Can’t speak to the narrow/wide chainring, but more generally:

I’ve managed to never drop a chain commuting on 1x10 normal road chainring setups but with clutch mechs.

I generally use either a chainkeeper/normal mech or clutch mech/no chainkeeper - either combo seem to provide suitable security

No - handy for MTB or CX, but not overly necessary for Road.

Gamut looks ok, but your 130BCD requirement isn’t going to help.

Yes, combined with a clutched derailleur, very much yes.

NFI - my knowledge doesn’t run to the widths of chains.

I’ve run a couple of 1 x 7 road bikes and never dropped a chain. I’ve always used old Shimano 600 type front rings though, nothing that’s ramped and pinned.

A few times I’ve ridden the trails without locking out my rear mech, and other than it being really noisy with chain slap, I’ve never dropped the chain. This is riding YT’s from Burnley end through to the loop, so a variety of terrain.
So I would assume your commuter will benefit from wide/narrow chainring, once you find one that suits your aesthetic requirements.

Using the racerace 110bcd on my commuter and its perfect. Remember graphics can be flipped

Same guy who sells the Shun chainrings on eBay also sells some chinese made narrow-wide rings.

I have one on my 1x9, seems good so far.

… will watch with interest.
I have dropped a chain 1/2 dozen times in a couple of years on my 130 bcd 1 x set up. i currently use a paul chain device that i modded. Previously i had a home made nylon chain keeper that worked better, but it got busted in a CX race bingle.

got any other cranks? I’m probs gonna buy a cheap set of 104 bcd’s to try this setup out…either shun or below.

I’ve for a race face ring and FWIW maybe you fide the reverse side so ugly?? At a glance it looks symmetrical but you might wanna check.

Wow great English! Typing on phone walking to bottle’O. And before anyone jumps in I took this flick just now before it got a good bath

Checked. Nothing 130bcd

Yeah I thing I might get one of the and flip it. Cheaper than the wolf tooth ones. Just wich they came in silver/metal

Seems that the biggest hurdle is 130bcd cranks. I would have thought that there would be more demand for 130bcd for CX’s using road cranks.

Get any 130 BCD ring and strip the ano with caustic. Or just spray over it with black rattle can.

Ten sp chain is only narrower on the outside, compared to 9, so either will mesh OK on the n/w ring.

A locked out front mech is a more effective and cheaper keeper than a Paul.

Absolute black, race face, wolf tooth, fetha.

But not as neat and tidy!

Gonna order me a race face .

Wait until you jam the chain between the ring and Paul keeper and need tools to get it out!

Yeah, I though there would be more…and less expensive.

NW FTW:

And if you hate the RF graphics, just turn the chainring around. 130BCD and 110BCD available. Do it.

How does that happen? I’ve never seen that? Wife has been using a chain keeper for 3 years, nearly every day. Hasn’t happened yet.

Thanks for the advice though. I think I’ll just give the internet my money.

Rad bike! Nice one!
