Over time it will affect the bag’s performance. The amount of down in each bag is calculated pretty carefully, and if you’ve bought a high loft (700+) bag you’ll start to notice a loss of filling reasonably quickly.
Might be a bit late now but that sort of leakage warrants a return and replacement by MD. If you can find the leak then take it back and ask them to fix it.
If you bought it from a local shop I’d still take it back and explain what happened. Good bags are meant to last, and seam stitching is a pretty basic thing for a bag manufacturer to get right.
Just received my Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 - decided an ultralight double skin tent would be the best compromise in regards to weight and bug avoidance as mozzies love me!
Also ordered a Klymit Inertia X Frame Recon. The recon is a slightly heavier version of the regular X Frame at 285g and is claimed to fold down to the size of a soft drink can. Although the Synmat UL7 was recommended here, the X frame was only $77 delivered so I thought worthwhile giving it a try…
Last big item I need to buy now is a sleeping bag. I have been looking at the ZPacks range and Western Mountaineering Highlite as options. Keen on feedback on these or other suggestions for a lightweight 0-2 C bags to fit someone 183cm tall. Prices and where to buy would be much appreciated!
Zpacks is pretty rad but exxy. I can vouch for the Elevated designs quilts, can customise pretty much anything and I almost feel asleep lying under Kumo Keith’s one last night. The one i’ve seen was custom extra long/extra wide for -1. Definitely felt like more material than I needed (180ish cm).
Those Eleveated Design Quilts - how do they go when it gets a bit cold and you need a little bit wrapped around? Do they form a bit of a sleeping bag at all? They have spiked my interest when I saw how small they pack down to when I saw Keith’s. I didn’t open it up and have a good look at how the quilt system worked though.
They use straps/tabs around the sleeping mat that keep it snug around you if you wish as far as I know. Usually people don’t have issues with draughts when using them
Planning to go on my first bikepacking overnighter in the next month or so. Will post some photos of the tent and loaded MTB then.
I may have to use my current down sleeping bag if I don’t get a light option prior. My current bag is far bulkier and heavier than what I am hoping to buy but should be okay for the first trip or two…
Quilts seem like a good space/weight saver in warm weather but I don’t think I’d use one in the cold. I find even 5-8 degrees overnight gets pretty nippy without good insulation over your head and shoulders…
The more I search options online, the more I am leaning towards the Revelation for the good price weight equation… Anyone here with personal experiences either good or bag with Enlightened equipment quilts?
@shakes - happy with the materials, finish etc? How long did it take to be made and then shipped?
I got one on Sean Aeons recommendation for my bikepacking trip
Get back to me in two weeks and I’ll let you know how they go!
So far just sleeping on the living room floor, very cosy and warm. I roll a lot while I sleep and the sides do splay out and let cold air in, will be fixed when I put the elastic straps under my sleeping mat.
Build quality seems very good, I got a -1 bag, extra wide, extra long and it is 621g and spacious. Compresses down to sweet fuck all
I’m 5’6" and went with the short? I was on the limit of height it suggested. With my toes in the footbox, it just covers my shoulders… Next time I think I’ll go the slightly longer one so I can cover myself fully… But I’ve only ever used it on the lounge floor. The -1 rating is optimistic unless you wrapped and buried like in a full bag. +3 is probably closer to my guess. But at this stage it’s just that.
Pumped up, I was skeptical the minimal Klymit X Frame mat would be comfortable. It is a lot thinner and smaller pumped up than what I expected!
After a 5 minute lie down on my side and back I could see myself being able to sleep, on the proviso that the ground underneath is billiard table smooth. Anything under the mat will be felt due to its thinness and the ‘Loft Pocket Technology’ or as anyone other than advertising executives would call them ‘big holes’.
Definitely felt like it was designed for someone around 6 foot like myself, anyone taller or shorter won’t line up with the padded sections.
