Powdercoating in Sydney

Hi Team
First post… I am looking to build my next bike with a powdercoted frame, was wondering if anyone can recommend a place in Sydney.

Cheers.

I got Mr Klean to do my Mr’s bike.

they are at Gow Street Padstow.

It’s cheap and cheerful, if you were super paranoid about runs and a finish that will outlast time itself maybe look elsewhere but for the cash (around 80 bucks) it’s pretty good.

They coat absolutely everything, so be prepared to spend some quality time with the dremel wire wheeling out the headtube and bottom bracket threads.

Overall i was stoked with the frame I got done.

There’s been talk of a place that goes by ABW in Mascot, someone mentioned $25 powdercoating on here…

After spending 6 hours prep, $40 on paints, 3 hours painting and 1 hour Clear coating this doesn’t seem like a bad option.

Yeah, I think user Drozzy mentioned these guys.

I guess this is them: http://www.abweng.com.au/

If anyone uses them it would be great to get a review.

I’m keen to check them out. I have to prep my next frame over the week, hopefully their turnaround isn’t too long…

But I’ll post up a review if all goes well, (or if it doesn’t)

I just rang them, they will do the powdercoat job no problem, however you need to strip the frame yourself first. ie, all cleaning and prep must be done prior to them getting it. They dont bead blast or anything like that.

I didnt talk pricing with them, but I usually find that it’s best to do the talking face to face!

Yeah I called too, $40 -$50 bucks with a weeks turn around. Preps no problem.

Did you tape up the BB, headtube and fork threads, before you gave it to them to powdercoat?

I’ve had a few frames done by them.

What I typicaly do is to half wind a set of bottom bracket cups in to protect the threads, and tape off any other threads, like the fork steerer etc.

Very happy with the job done for the money, no complaints at all!

Getting my frame dusted tomorrow… enable smileys

For some reason he did mine for $25. I got two frames done at the same time, he mumbled something about being students or something.

Had someother friends go and haggled him down to $40 cash each.

Remember to have NO chemical residue, they do not prep the frames at all, I sanded then down the morning before and carried them with a rag, and the finish has been top notch, not a single scratch or chip and has been ridden every day for the past few months.

Anyone know a cheap sandblaster?

Lol I just spent 5 hours prep and that was fast by my standards, I would LOVE to find a cheap sandblaster.

yeah mate, I stuffed rags down the steerer and seatpost tubes, I put an old BB in the thread and took it to him but he said take it out because as soon as I undo it half the powdercoat will come off with it. So I did a bit of a rush job with the tools in my ute to tape it up and gave it to him. The tape melted/got taken off in the media blasting process unfortunately.

It took me maybe 20mins with the dremel and wire wheel to get the BB to go back in sweet, not a major hassle.

Dropped the frame of @ abw engineering this morning, Aparently they acid wash it… so I had to remove the tape. looks like im gonna need to get me a wire brush fitting for the dremel…

They taped mine up for me?

I love how this place gives such incredibly different information to everyone. it truly is an absurd place (when in reception, poke your head into the room full of old russian women assembling circuits by hand.), but for powdercoating at this price I don’t really mind.

If your carefull, the powder wont come off. What Mt Kleen told me to do however when I removed my cups, was to run a razor blade around the edge of the thread before they are screwed out, and they would come out easy, which they did!

Yeah yeah - sounds easier than mucking about with a wire brush attachment and wearing/stuffing the BB threads on an old steel frame.

if you live on the northern beaches these guys did me a frame: Brookvale Powder Coating
they removed the old paint and sandblasted it then repainted it for 50 bones. but i think they meant to charge me another 50 for the paint removal

Will give them a call tomorrow and see if theyll do it for 50 again. Dont think I could be arsed stripping three frames.
