Pump?

After seeing how many flats Prawza got in the desert I’m thinking I need something a little more user friendly than the blackburn mini pump I usually carry but rarely use. Anyone have a favourite? I thought these Lezyne micro floor ones look good:

Edit: I should also say that I’m pumping up 2.1-2.4" 29er tyres.

What’s wrong with zefal hpx velcro’d to your toptube?

Nothing. That’s definitely an option.

That Lezyne looks pretty baller actually. If you can cope with the added weight, do it!

i have the HP version, use it for commuting, is great.

I’ve had a Lezyne Pressure Drive for years. It’s light and works really well. Blakey might have a carbonish one he’s trying to move on. I reckon anything bigger is a bit of a waste of weight.

My riding buddy has the Lezyne pressure drive. I’m happy to use that. But I thought if we’re likely to be getting more than one flat a day then it’s gonna be worth the extra weight. We’re going to be carrying so much water that an extra 100g won’t be noticed.

Tubeless an option?

Nah neither of us are set up for tubeless. Would be ideal. But the trip is occurring when I’m between jobs with zero income, so I’m not about to go buy some new wheels and tyres.

Totally understand, just use watcha got then. Preventative sealant in tubes is an option

I’d say you’re doing something wrong if you’re getting regular punctures.

Just preparing for the worst. Prawza seemed to get that many - although he was running 32mm tyres. Probably we’ll be better with large volume tyres at avoiding pinch flats but we’ll still face the sharp rocks and thorns. Even 4WDers going through there carry at least two spares and still regularly get caught out.

Also, this: https://www.rapidascent.com.au/theredback/content/equipmentandsafety

tubes with removable cores are common as muck and you just need a syringe that you can pick up from a pharmacy for a couple of dollars. No brainer IMO.

Yep.

My bro rode two Kiwi Brevettes with tubed tyres (1400km on some very rough roads), only got one puncture on a road made from rotten rock - but it was bad enough to need to boot the tyre.

Take a small sheet of tvyek for booting tyres and some robust cable ties. Split a side wall and you’ll thank me.

Oh and a friend of mine over here rides a fat bike and has one of those micro pumps mounted on the fork leg. Tidy.

Sugarkanye has one of the micro floors - does a good job. More durable tyres would be my first priority after naively running a Racing Ralph on the rear while bikepacking Tassie.

I have one of those pumps, they are good, get the high volume one without the guage -the guage is pretty useless.

I have used that pump on my 29x2.1 tyres fine.

Who’s Prawza?

Lauren got a flat on her Schwalbe Marathon Extreme on the Mawson because the bead slipped and it tore the valve out. Otherwise, no flats. I had a few in my Saguaros. Also got a slime filled tube in Melrose but never used it. They rated them there though.

A dude who rode across NT on his sw8 fixie

Old forum bloke who rode across Australia was awesome.

He’s pretty good at polo too.
