Retro MTB thread

You made me look, been arguing on the internet since 1995…

Used to be awesome threads with Sheldon and Jobst back in the day…

Why didn’t you guys do more to stop 1998 - 2004 from happening, luckily 95% of the bikes made in that time had cracked by the late 2000s so I’ve rarely had to look at them, but those must have been some dark days for beardos.

Lance was a juggernaut, hard to stop.

Pick this up last friday arvo off GT, wanted something to cruise on with the kiddies.

In really good nick

Exact specs as factory bar the tyres, will SS it, and try squeeze my 2.35 ignitors on

Also, if anyone has a spare Kona P2 fork hit me up!

There’s one on BNA. STX is sweet

a P2 fork ? where???

I just bought a $20 step through trail breaker (going to see if Em will come bike camping) with STX and was generally easy to get shifting sweetly. But I can’t get fd to shift to big ring.

Ftfy.

Ah sorry mate. Axeman74 had one I thought, but it snot in his current ad. Might be worth contacting him to see what he’s got though. Your bike is 26" right? What’s the axle-to-crown?

What’s the problem Dalli?

I haven’t investigated too closely but I think the shifters not engaging on the 3rd click. Probably won’t need the big dog for a while so I’ll probably wait and see how much Em likes the bike before investigating further.

Maybe swap out the middle ring for a 40t or something and run it sub-compact?

I opened it up and worked in some WD40 and got it working. Thought I should do the rear shifter too so opened that up as well and now its shifting beautifully but I somehow lost the connection to the gear indicator.

1997 Kona Fire Mountain - chromo frame with OG bits, but i SS’d it to a 44/16, raceface deus cranks and ignitor 2.35s.

Nice Jase, looks great!
Should be pretty light and flickable I dare say?
How is the old RS fork- still work?

Cheers H!

Cant comment too much about being light and flicky! Wasnt built for the trails, just wanted something to ride with the fam and this popped up on GT.

As for the fork, feels like a rigid so id say its dead.

really nice jase

cheers M!

want some wider bars for it though, tracking down some wide/alloy/silver/25.4/30mm rise/reasonably priced bars seems a little tricky!

Couldnt pass this up - Full Deore LX, XT thumbies, CODA cantis, LX hubs to Ritchey Vantage Comp rims, and a cool Cannondale rear rack. Owner said he purchased it from the states about 20 year ago, had it serviced then sat in his garage ever since. Sure enough i pumped the tires and everything works sweet!

How i picked it up

After a few adjustments

Colour is a metallic dark green, bit hard to see in the dark though.

Nice one! But how will you climb without the bar ends?!? :stuck_out_tongue:
