Riding in the rain!

had it. was ok. THE JAMS destroyed it.

Just OK?
Whatcha using now?
Most rain jackets are way too bulky to pack down for jersey carriage.

You gotta differentiate between a rain jacket and just a shell. Shell will fit in a jersey pocket, but obviously isn’t as water proof. Rain jacket will keep you dry but won’t fit in jersey pocket.

Compromises, compromises.

Indeed. Always wondered why there is no such thing as a special Goretex shell that is both. Impossible?

once you start sweating bad, gortex is MEGA hot.

The only jacket i have that is 100% WP is my (moto) dririder. I use it without liner for hiking, etc. Bulky as. I guess you could commute in it though.

hey man, that crazy weather destroyed it!

Montane Featherlight leaks like a sieve. Pearl Izumi Optix much the same.

SURELY there is a waterproof, breathable ultralight. SURELY!

Been looking at that mission workshops number, but it looks pretty heavy… and its four hundred beans.

Cadence Barrier jackets have got pretty cheap now, and they look good! Gonna get me one a dem soon, and maybe some ground effect waterproof shorts + sealskins socks.

Where do you see the are the cheap ones? They are still a few hundred bucks as far as I can see.

On the Cadence website they’re $190. Barrier Rain Jacket (breathable, limited, Stealth, Waterproof) | Jackets | Cadence Collection

Not super cheap, but as I’ve learnt: the more money you spend, the dryer you stay.

Mine isn’t too bad, i.e if I’m cruising in the rain in winter I don’t get sweaty, though I wish it had pit zips which my hiking jacket does which useful.

I’ve got the Mavic Hellium Atium jacket which has been great over the last 3.5 or so years. Not water proof but breathes well and in heavy rain is better than nothing. Can you chuck it in your jersey pocket.
Unfortunately it got a few tears in it and I decided to put it in the washing machine. Bad idea. Now the jacket has basically delaminated itself.

I’ve got a 10 year old trek MTB shell, it stops the rain for a short while and once water/sweat has soaked into me being it stops too much being replaced with fresh water and making me cold. So I’m soggy but warm, booties have the same effect.

But I’m soft and won’t usually start a ride if its raining and run to work for the commute if its wet.

and here it is fitted,

Cost 2 Cable ties. Might have to trim it once I have it on the bike and have ridden with it.

i have this jacket: Patagonia Men’s Torrentshell Rain Jacket
it’s not an ultralight, but it is definitely waterproof. it folds down into one of its own pockets, and could possibly be squeezed into a jersey pocket. maybe. i think it cost me $95 at REI, pretty good deal. and it has massive pit zips which helps when i start to sweat.

post/pre ride deoderant - My single biggest issue with riding in the rain is my man smell afterwards is much similar to a wet dog. For some reason no matter what I end up smelling foul. regardless of what deoderant I use beforehand and afterwands. Doesnt matter if I wear nothing but boardies and a tee or a full breathable waterproof kit. And I cant get it off me for the rest of the day, no showers where I work doesnt help. and with me deciding I’m riding every single day this year rain hail or shine wont help either.

Any suggestions other than to buy workmates nose plugs?

it pissed down on me on the ride in today and it was glooooorious

side note - Chunky Toad was bone dry on the inside.

Was gonna ride to Kinglake this morning. Stupid rain.

This morning’s ride to work was soooo much fun. I take it all back rain - you’re awesome.
