For cross or MTB?
I wouldn’t go for a shoe like that for cross cos no ablity to add toe spikes.
Next cross shoes I go for will be Giro - Code, Gauge, Privateer or Empire. or Sidi or Mavic (note I have small feet which are not particularly wide). Have had no luck with Shimano, Spesh, Bontrager in terms of fit.
evans has 50% off a bunch of gear, Privateers are now $82!
Five ten freeriders, all the hype is legit. Very sticky, to the point where sometimes trying to make small adjusments when on the pedals is a little hard.
But awesome when you start to get some air, no matter how small (me). More confidence to hit jumps faster and go bigger.
My noob 2c

Thread dig.
My Privateers are close to dead, and sizes are now hard to come by online (size 47).
Any recommendations on something similar? I want a solid tread with some bite, solid toe cap, a fairly clean upper without too many seams or stitching that will split, and ratchet (not laces or boa). I go pretty hard on my shoes – regular adventure riding with steep rocky hike-a-bike, crashes, mud, wet, everything.
Maybe I just look harder for more Privateers in my size?
I should also mention that I have a second pair of lightweight carbon-soled Specialized shoes that I use for tarmac and civilised gravel rides. The Privateer replacement will be for less civilized riding.
I have been riding with the Specialized Comp MTB shoes for over 3 years now and they are holding up well!
This is not what you asked for, but I’ve had my Jan approved Dromatis for a few years now and they’re still in great condition and are very comfortable, and great for walking in. I’ve worn them to work before. I haven’t splashed through creeks in them often though, just occasionally. I maintain them with RM Williams Saddle Conditioner (used on Brooks too) and a bit of polish occasionally to keep the colour. I’m stoked on them. Size 43 Giros translated to size 43 Dromatis.
Otherwise, I’d look at Shimano
Those Dromartis are way way too nice for the antics I find myself in. Wearing those would be like taking a Porsche to the stock car races. They do look like great shoes though.
The Specialized Ezy mentioned look good - close to what I’m after.
I’ve also been looking at the Shimano Enduro range - good solid grippy sole and clean uppers, although not too keen on the Boa. But I feel like I could be hard on them and they’d hold up. Example - ME501 –
