Single speed freewheel track hub vs freehub

Kinda noob question, but what is better?

freewheel on track hub:

cog & spacers on cassette freehub:

My understanding is that a track hub with a freewheel would be better than a spaced out cassette hub because the wheel would be less dished. Am I right?

In order:
White Ind / Paul etc SS/fixed hub, symmetrical rim (widest flange spacing)
Trad ss/fixed hub, symmetrical rim
Cassette hub, asymmetrical rim
Cassette hub, symmetrical rim
Multi speed freewheel hub, any rim. (narrow bearing width)

Thanks Blakey.

Anyone know what that cool ‘Sheriff star’ style track hub is on that flickr photo I found is? ^^

High flange Dura Ace. They did come in black.

I had spacers and a cog on my first s/s mtb. Then I ran a freewheel on my first road ss. Can’t say I noticed any difference at all.

isn’t this “fixed.org.au”?

FFS we’ve already been through this…

you talk big for someone with two posts to their name

Hey man, just as a Metallica forum can occasionally go off topic and wax lyrical about how shit Megadeth are, so too can a fixed forum discuss the patently useful act of freewheeling.

H, Just don’t get a Shimano freewheel, not much chop IMHO, OK for the beater though.

Yeah thanks Snail… one word ENO TRIALS!!

the answer is track hub.

I just got an eno freewheel and put it on the fw side of a phil hub. It’s a beautiful piece of machinery. It engages much faster than any other fw cog I’ve tried. The sound is cool too, reminds me of a fishing reel for some reason.

world class, 5th response posting.

Can’t wait to try it out. Damian rolls one and says they are great for keeping pedestrians in the city out of his path!

I have a WI 16T and a V!Z 18T, both buzz louder than Mckenny’s killah bee cross wheels.

Horatio, here is exactly what you need to get my old Record wheel setup as a sweet 130mm S/S:

AXLE-18: 174mm long, M10x26tpi. You already have cones & track nuts, grab 2x 5mm spacers and you’re set.
Wheels Manufacturing - Hub Axles

Call Abbotsford & Human Powered, I think they stock the Wheels Mfg parts, they may have one in stock.

(130mm spacing, 5mm dropouts x 2, 15mm track nuts x 2 = 170mm, that’s long enough right? How long is the current axle?)

Thanks Blakey. I did call Abbotsford but no luck. However Shifterbikes says he stocks a 130mm compatible axle. Not sure the brand though.

I got the WI from aspire- coughed up the extra $20 for fedex. It arrived withing 4 or 5 days and cost about 110 all up I think. hjb1000 PM me if you want to give mine a go- i’m in norfcote or sthbank

haha. Even an idiot is allowed to ask a question…

Actually, it was my 2nd post. But why would I tippy-toe around the pool flicking water droplets when I can just f**king JUMP RIGHT IN??

Word to the idiot - don’t tell anyone your username if you ever turn up to a group ride. People remember this shit. [/advice]
